Today is International Rock Day and what better way to celebrate than to pay homage to oldest, biggest rocks of them all… The Matobo Hills!
These magical, iconic hills were cataclysmically formed over 2 billion years ago with granite being forced to the surface, it has eroded to produce smooth "whaleback dwalas" and broken kopjes, strewn with boulders - a haphazard marble game of the Giants.
History and culture, as well as the rocky landscape, are the reasons why Matobo Hills National Park was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 2003. The National Park was established in 1926 (the oldest Park in Zimbabwe), this 44 500-hectare park, stretches out from 35km south of Bulawayo - Zimbabwe's second-largest city.
The area was given its name by the founder of the Ndebele people, King Mzilikazi, and it means "bald heads".
There is evidence that the original dwellers of these timeless hills and caves were the San Bushmen and now it is home to another special resident – the endangered Rhinos!
The Matobo Hills - timeless, spiritual, and mysterious. A visit there will leave you humbled and awestruck!
