THE COOL LIST: ALBANIA AMONG THE 30 MOST EXCITING DESTINATIONS TO VISIT 2024

Ahead of the new year, we’ve crossed the world to find the 30 most exciting destinations for 2024. With landmark hotels opening, ambitious rewilding projects under way and new train routes making travel easier than ever, there’s a lot to choose from for your next trip.

A wild escape in Europe’s rising star

Travelers on the hunt for something a little different from their next European adventure are increasingly looking towards Albania.

This piece of the Balkan jigsaw is drawing a rising number of visitors thanks to its Adriatic and Ionian coasts, intriguing Ottoman and Communist past, and relatively nascent tourism scene.

Tucked into the northern interior, the Albanian Alps are equally part of the draw. Known, rather ominously, as the Accursed Mountains, this realm of jagged karst peaks is a dream for hikers, where lynxes roam spruce forests and wildflowers cover valley floors.

Those looking to tackle the region’s challenging trails can set off on a new, eight-day, self-guided tour with Walks Worldwide, which offers an itinerary that includes treks through mountain passes, traditional homestays and a visit to the village of Theth, starting point of the Peaks of the Balkans hiking trail.

Albania is also more accessible than ever thanks to a raft of new air routes.

Ryanair has recently started flying to the capital Tirana from Edinburgh, Manchester and Stansted, while Wizz Air will operate from Birmingham, Edinburgh and Liverpool from 19 December 2023.

GJIROKASTRA FOLK FESTIVAL: UNIQUE NATIONAL TREASURE

Gjirokastra Folk Festival is the most beautiful and the most important festival for Albania.

Gjirokastër National Folk Festival is an artistic festival taking place, before every 4 years, now, every year at Gjirokastër Castle in Gjirokastër, southern Albania. The festival was first held in 1968 and is regarded as the most important event in Albanian culture.

There is a celebration of folk music from all regions of Albania and a parade of the best traditional folk costumes.

The last event attracted over 1,000 artists with one of the highlights being the iso-polyphony style of Albanian folk singing, which has been chosen by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage.

Don't miss this truly unique event.

BERAT CASTLE: A TIMELESS JOURNEY IN HISTORY

Settled in the 4th century BC, the town of Berat is considered one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in Albania. Berat Castle is unique in the world because people still living inside the castle for 2000 years or more.

Berat has been witness to the coexistence of various religious and cultural communities over the centuries and is one of the few examples of the architectural character typical of the Ottoman period. Because of this Berat, like Gjirokastra, was inscribed on the UNESCO list in 2008.

The town of Berat is found on the Osum River, which has cut a deep gorge in the limestone rock thus forming a natural fortress.

This fortress of Berat, known as Kalaja to the locals, is a dominant feature overlooking the town. The origins of the castle go all the way back to the 4th century with 24 towers and four entrance gateways.

If you like walking up (but it is a hard walk up a steep hill), I’ve read suggest taking the bus or taxi from town up to the castle and then walking back down. Do be very careful when walking along the cobblestone hills because they are very, very slippery – even in good shoes.

Ransacked by almost everyone throughout its history many of its treasures are now long gone, but the remnants of some of its architectural elements can still be found, such as courtyards, a large cistern in the centre, and numerous stone houses that are still occupied to this day. A guided tour is the best way to visit the castle to really help you learn about the unique architecture and its full history.

Also within the fortress you can visit the Onufri National Museum, so named after the famous 16th-century Albanian artist that painted many icons and other works of art. He was well known for introducing emotions into Byzantine art, despite strict codes against this.

The museum is located inside the 18th century Orthodox St. Mary’s Church and features about 200 of his works of art.

Also located within the fortress walls is a little restaurant, also called Onufri, which is owned by a very enthusiastic and social man who serves up traditional (and delicious!) dishes. Our whole tour group ate lunch there together and were served dish after dish to try, along with the local firewater called ‘raki‘ which, by the looks of the one brave soul on our tour that tried it, is potent!

LUKOVE BEACH: ALBANIAN BLUE VILLAGE

Lukove Village is a small, charming coastal village in southern Albania, just a few kilometers from the city of Sarande. With its crystal-clear waters, stunning scenery, and rich history, Lukove is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to experience the beauty and culture of Albania. Lukova (Lukovë) is a coastal town on the Albanian Riviera with around 3,000 inhabitants. The village is located on higher grounds, providing spectacular views over the beaches and the Ionian Sea. The surroundings are fascinating and full of olive and orange plantations. The name Lukova was also derived from the green landscape as ‘lluke’ means ‘green landscape’ in the old Slavic language.

Here are few things to do there:

● Explore the virgin beaches:

The Lukove Beach is a pristine, rocky beach that stretches for kilometers along the coast. The crystal-clear waters of the Ionian Sea are perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. The beach is surrounded by olive groves and pine forests, providing a natural and relaxing atmosphere.

● Visit the Lukove Church:

A short walk from the town of Lukova, hidden on the hill in the forest, there is an old orthodox church that you can visit. The Church of Saint Friday is thought to be built in the 17th century but is in a deteriorating condition. Close to the basilica there is also a small waterfall. The upper town of Lukova is also great for its views of the coastline, beaches and the Ionian Sea. There are few great places that are also perfect to watch the sunset. The photo below was taken from the small cafe at the top of the road that is going down to Lukova Beach.

● Take a boat tour:

A boat trip is a great opportunity to discover the Albanian Riviera while floating on the crystal clear waters of the Ionian Sea. Head off to some virgin beaches, like Kakome, Krorez or the islands of Ksamil. Some of the best beaches can only be reached by boat, so a boat trip is a must-do when you’re in Saranda

● Experience the local hospitality:

Albanian hospitality is known throughout the region, and Lukove Village is no exception. Visitors are welcomed with open arms and can expect to be treated to warm, friendly hospitality. The locals are known for their warmth, generosity, and willingness to share their culture and traditions with visitors. You can stay in a local guesthouse, where you can experience traditional Albanian hospitality and cuisine firsthand. The locals are always happy to share their stories and traditions, making your stay in Lukove Village a truly memorable experience.

● Enjoy the local cuisine:

Lukove Village is known for its delicious seafood dishes, including fresh fish, calamari, and octopus. You can enjoy a meal at one of the many seafood restaurants in the village, or you can sample some of the local cuisine at a traditional Albanian taverna

MORE FACTS ABOUT ALBANIA BEFORE YOU GO.

1.The country has 13 small islands. Only two of them are more than 1 square kilometre. These two islands are Kunë and Sazan.

2. The highest point in Albania is Mount Korab, which is 2,764 metres high. The mountain is the highest point in both other countries as well.

3. Lake Shkodra, Southern Europe’s largest lake, is found in Albania. The lake, whose surface area varies between 370 sq km and 530 sq km, is shared between Albania and Montenegro.

4. The Albanian language is one of the three surviving Indo-European languages besides Armenian and Greek.

5. The oldest lake in Europe is found in Albania. The lake, known as Ohrid, is one of the world’s ancient lakes. A variety of unique plants and animal species, as well as living fossils, are found at the lake. The lake is protected by UNESCO due to its heritage.

6. Locally, she was known as Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu but you likely know as Mother Teresa. What you may not have known is that she was Albanian and is a revered heroine to her fellow Albanians and to people the world over. She is also the only person from the country to have ever won the Nobel Prize.

7. It’s a known fact that afternoon siestas are common in warm climates such as Spain and Mexico but you likely didn’t know that they are a thing in some areas of Albania too! Between the hours of 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM, which is the hottest part of the day, many shops and businesses close and workers relax and enjoy the afternoon sunshine over coffee or a much-needed nap.

8. Albanian is the second country in the world after Spain for the number of coffee shops.

9. One of the surprising things about Albanian buses is that you pay for your ticket on arrival at your destination, not before. Clearly, Albanian drivers trust the passengers enough to allow the payment at the end.

10. Albania is one of these countries that charge you the exact price from the menu. There are no nasty surprises when you get the bill with extras such as tax and services charges. The price on the menu is the final price. It is also customary (an excellent and generous custom) to offer free bread and a complimentary fruit platter at the end of the meal.
