What is the story of this awesome city on the shore of the Southern Ocean? Albany is flourishing now, and it also did in the past. When was that?

Curving around Mt Adelaide, Breaksea Island comes into view and stories of the construction of the lighthouse and its connection to the ANZAC narrative are revealed. At Middleton Beach we pause a moment to absorb the vista of the ocean and perhaps if we're lucky, a glimpse of sheltering whales and calves in these winter months. Journeying into the city centre, along the way we drive past the oldest farm in Western Australia and learn of the contribution it made to the social life and nourishment of the early community; a property with a chequered history. Visit one of the earliest homes in Western Australia at Patrick Taylor Cottage.

At the National ANZAC Centre interactive displays will take you on an intimate journey of a participant of the war. Under the shade of trees planted to remember fallen soldiers, the Avenue of Honour leads to the Memorial of the Desert Mounted Corps. The dawn service is Padre White’s story. Take in the view that the departing ANZAC Troops had before they sailed onwards to war; for some of them, the last vision of homeland.

Learn more about our guided tour to the Granite Skywalk Porongurup

For many this is a real adventure to walk in nature, follow a nature trail, take another step up on the ascent to the final scramble through the rocks. Then through the alleyway between colossal granite forms. And the final climb on the enclosed fireman’s ladder to the catwalk that is the Granite Skywalk.

For most it is a breath-taking reward for the challenge they faced. The vista from the top is extraordinary – and it doesn’t matter the weather either. Clouds come and go and in between reveal open landscape, views to the coast and north to the Stirling Ranges.

Finish by savouring the wine of the Great Southern of Western Australia during your lunch at a Porongurups winery.

You too can get there! Phone 0418 414 425 to book.

Here’s a 5-day plan for your next journey to Albany, Western Australia.

Day One: arrive Albany and settle in. Head to the historic Stirling Terrace precinct for a meal in one of the many eateries with views to Princess Royal Harbour. Maybe you’ll spot some street art along the way! Albany alleys are strewn with murals.

Day Two: sense the edge at The Gap in Torndirrup National Park on a half-day tour with Albany Tours. Take in the 360-degree views of Western Australia’s southern coastline from the summit of Stoney Hill. Walk in bushland abundant in wildflowers; hakea, acacia, banksia, dryandra, adenanthus, agonis. Feel the power of the wind and water from the masterfully crafted, protected walkway cantilevered over The Gap. See the pounding waves of the Southern Ocean as they thrash the granite walls and surge through the spaces. Complete your journey with a generous serving of scones with tea or coffee.

Day Three: head out of town to either Denmark or Mt Barker to taste the region on a full-day tour with Albany Tours. Meander through backroads to taste outstanding wines from wineries of the Great Southern Wine appellation. This Western Australian region has a characteristically cool climate with slow ripening times which allows for the development of rich flavours and quality grape juice. The most awarded varieties are Riesling and Shiraz. Albany Tours ensures an intimate and knowledgeable tasting experience in the region and you step up to the tasting bench ahead of others. Our wine tours Include lunch and all tastings.

Day Four: learn more of the ANZAC and settlement story on a half-day ‘History and Highlights’ tour with Albany Tours. On Mt Adelaide at the National ANZAC Centre interactive displays will take you on an intimate journey of a participant of the war. Under the shade of trees planted to remember fallen soldiers, the Avenue of Honour leads to the Memorial of the Desert Mounted Corps on Mt Clarence. The dawn service is Padre White’s story. Take in the view that the departing ANZAC Troops had before they sailed onwards to war; for some of them, Albany Western Australia was the last vision of homeland. Includes morning tea with scones.

Day Five: meander home with a heart and mind full of history, nature, and delicious treats from the Great Southern region.

Some passengers are looking to move beyond the town square to see more of what this corner of the world has to offer. Busy Blue Bus Tours has been providing great tour experiences to cruise ship customers since 2014. If you are ready to see the most iconic parts of Albany, these are the tours we recommend:

One of the biggest treasures in the Great Southern region of Western Australia (and there are many!), is the Bremer Bay Canyon.

In 2013, this unique part of the world was shown to the masses for the very first time in a documentary, "The Search for the Ocean’s Super Predator". From this moment, the hype surrounding the two dozen deepwater rifts running up to the continental shelf edge along southern West Australia continued to grow. Visitors have seen an abundance of marine life in this area including Killer Whales, whale sharks, stripped dolphins, s***m whales, and birds such as the petrel and shearwater.

Since the release of the documentary, the Bremer Bay Canyon has become a favourite for local and international visitors every summer.

Family-owned business, Naturaliste Charters Whale Watching , became the first to offer 8-hour world-class expeditions to the Canyon so that we can see the incredible marine life for ourselves. Their tours are led by marine biologists who provide live, educational commentary so you know exactly what you are seeing. They know how to monitor the weather forecast to allow for the best vantage points and they pride themselves on respecting both the environment and the wildlife.

Once you board the Alison Maree (Nautraliste Charters’ luxury vessel), you are in for 8 hours of excitement and hospitality and the last thing you want is to drive to and from Bremer Bay from Albany since it’s a 2hr drive and 180km each way on a remote section of highway. Plus, when driving from Albany you’ll be heading into the sun in the morning and again when you drive home. Instead, let us take you in our extremely comfortable vehicle. You might even nod off on the way home – you wouldn’t be the first!

Let us show you more by taking you on this bucket-list experience this summer. You can book your Killer Whale Expedition with Busy Blue Bus and Naturaliste Charters directly with us at busybluebus.com.au
