Explore the Barker Creek Circuit

The Bunya Mountains is chock full of delightful walks, and the Barker Creek Circuit is a popular and achievable one, with lots of options to choose from. You can start this scenic track either from Dandabah Picnic Area or the Paradise Falls car park, and it’s a must-do for waterfall lovers. Along the track you’ll encounter Paradise Falls, Little Falls and the Big Falls 122m drop, which is a spectacular sight after heavy rain. The trail then links in with the Scenic Circuit track, or you can choose to add an extra 1.5km to the walk (750m each way) to take in the Big Falls Lookout and Barker’s Creek Gorge. For an extra 1km, choose the alternate Pine Gorge Lookout and Festoon Falls route instead of the shorter Tim Shea Falls section of the Scenic Circuit. Whatever way you go, take a picnic lunch and your water bottle and enjoy this outstanding walk.

It's bunya nut time!

It’s the most iconic time of the year at the Bunya Mountains – bunya nut time! These giant edible pinecones, which can sometimes weigh up to 10kg, are ripening and falling across the Bunya Mountains, with loud crashing sounds often being heard under the trees. This ancient food source has been long beloved by the local indigenous people, and was even once food for dinosaurs many eons ago! The birds and animals are enjoying the feast, but we’ve managed to find plenty to use in the café as well to make our delicious bunya burgers and other scrumptious delicacies! It’s a great time of year to visit – just make sure you don’t stand or park under the bunya pines, as the nuts can drop without warning!

Dear visitors

There will be a planned mountain-wide power outage on Tuesday 20nd February between 8am and 2pm

This will affect ALL HOUSES and facilities on the Bunya Mountains.

Water pumps will not work, so this will mean no water to the houses

Please plan by showering the night before, putting a bucket of water by the toilet to flush, and a jug of water in the fridge.

Your best bet is to go out for the day, eg to Dalby or Kingaroy, for breakfast and other facilities

We apologise for the intense inconvenience. Ergon just does what they want to, unfortunately :(

We are downsizing, so “Lochanbar” is now available for purchase by another loving owner on a walk in/walk out (i.e. house and all contents) basis.

We bought “Lochanbar” in January 2017, and gave it a new bathroom and kitchen, an all-weather driveway, all new soft furnishings, mattresses, bedding, kitchenware, and electric appliances. What we didn’t replace, we refreshed, repaired, or repainted, and we filled the house with works from local artists. We have also installed split cycle air conditioning, UV drinking water treatment, new water tanks, and a Telstra smart antenna to improve Wi-Fi reception. All the hard work has been done!

The house is a wonderful place for your own holidays with family and friends, and is also ready for immediate holiday rental. It’s proved incredibly popular with our guests since we took it over.

For further information and pricing, please contact the Bunya Mountains Accommodation Centre, who are handling this sale for us. (Same place where you booked your stay!)

Drop in for chat at the office, phone them on 07 46683126, or see the listing for “Lochanbar” at

Who loves driving up the mountain to the Bunya Mountains, and watching the scenery change like magic from the dry and dusty scrubby plains to the lush, green, overarching rainforest? The change is startling when you first visit the Bunya Mountains, as it hardly seems possible that such a rainforest oasis could exist in the midst of the surrounding lowlands. But the more you come to this special place, the more you’ll feel as if you’re entering another world as you begin the climb up the mountain. You can almost feel the cares and stresses of your ordinary life falling away the higher you climb into the realm of tranquillity and peace that you’ll find at the Bunya Mountains.

(Thanks to Brenden Evans for the photo.)

Things to do at the Bunya Mountains – go waterfall hunting

The sight and sound of falling water is one that draws us in, and it can be both relaxing and invigorating at the same time. There are plenty of waterfalls to discover in this cool green mountain paradise, from larger falls, to gushing cascades, to small tricking waterfalls flowing into rock pools. The Bunya Mountains abounds with waterfalls of all sizes, and you’ll come across most of them along the rainforest walking tracks. Grab a map from the Visitor Information Centre and set out on a waterfall-hunting hike – you’re sure to get some great photos along the way (like this one from Scott Higgins) as well as enjoying the wonder of the natural world. Of course, many of the small cascades aren’t marked on any map – they’re simply hidden delights for you to discover along the way.

Price Rise for 2023-2024

I'm sorry to advise that our prices have increased for the coming year from 1 April 2024.

You may have noticed we reduced our prices by $30 a night mid last year. We were advised to do so because Knights Cleaners who own a near monopoly on linen services in the region, had raised their prices dramatically. We had a choice - stop supplying linen and reduce prices, or raise prices and keep supplying a full set of linen.

We decided to try and keep prices low so the families who love the Bunyas could keep coming while everything is going up, and reduced our prices.

Unfortunately, too many guests were not bringing their own linen, and were taking throws off couches or sleeping just on the mattress protectors and pillows without cases (yuck) - which makes more work for our cleaners (and increases costs.)

We were up there doing maintenance this last couple of weeks, and discovered that one party had stolen a set of our person sheets (kept in a private box under a bed) and replaced them with single sheets (including a stolen hired sheet) to cover the theft.

So we've given up. We'll provide two sets of queen linen and include them in a now higher per night charge.

I hate doing this, but if the house is to remain available for holiday-makers, we have to do what we can to preserve the cleanliness of the house. The cleaners are not an inexhaustible resource.

I hope that those of you who love Mariposa will keep coming back, and if you can't, I hope you understand why prices have risen.

The weather in late Summer/Early Autumn is simply stunning up at the Bunyas, and it's a great time to visit before the high season starts.
