On the second day of Christmas, my true love sent to me...

Two Bunya nuts

Native to the Bunya Mountains National Park, the ancient and towering Bunya Pines bear this unique delicacy. Reaching up to the size of a football, these pine cone shaped cases are filled with wedge shaped nuts.

Our Visitor Information Centres stock a range of home baked goodies using the nuts. The Bunya Mountains are a ‘must-do’ all year round with a rich history, stunning vistas, onsite dining, natural beauty, friendly wildlife, walking and mountain biking trails and short and long term accommodation.

Bunya Mountain upgrades on the cards

There’s plenty of good news for the Bunya Mountains in the recent state government budget announcement, with a few projects on the cards that will enhance access to our lovely part of the world; including:

• A $5.5 million upgrade to visitor facilities at the Bunya Mountains National Park, with $1 million to be spent in 2023-24.
• Maidenwell-Bunya Mountains Road (Section 1) $936,000 upgrade to bring the unsealed road to sealed standard.
• Maidenwell-Bunya Mountains Road (Section 2) $3.35 million upgrade to bring the unsealed road to sealed standard.
• Bunya Highway (Dalby – Kingaroy) $651,000 reconstruction works.

We look forward to seeing these projects come to completion in the near future.

Down a dirt track in a national park is an unusual place for a university... but this a university with a difference. The 'bush uni' in the Bunya Mountains teaches the traditional culture of the Wakka Wakka people. Tourism operators say it will be one of the major drawcard attractions for the 2032 B...

The markets are cancelled this month

Unfortunately, we have had to cancel the markets for July, as we have had too much rain up here and the ground is too soft for the markets to be held. But the markets will be back next month – so we’ll hopefully see you in August!

See what lies in all directions from Fisher’s Lookout

A trip to Fisher’s Lookout offers superb views over the tranquil and scenic lowlands, where the sky seems to merge into the distant mountain ranges. If you stay long enough, you’ll also have the chance to watch awe-inspiring sunsets and catch a magical view of the stars. Plus, you can discover just what lies in all directions from the highest point at Fisher’s Lookout. Have a look at the map next time you’re there, and take a moment to orient yourself in the region’s geography as well as the superb and relaxing views.

This can only be good :-)
