One last highlight from A&K’s Travel Specialist Saadika Mahmood is going on a whale watching cruise in Akaroa, an easy drive from Christchurch. Part of the Banks Peninsula formed by volcanic eruptions over 6 million years ago, Akaroa Harbour is one of the craters which formed. As the only French settlement in New Zealand, Akaroa is a charming harbour village in which to explore. Saadika’s absolute highlight was seeing dolphins, whales, penguins and fur seals whilst taking in the stunning volcanic cliff landscape from the water.

A&K’s Travel Specialist Saadika Mahmood came back raving about a little-known experience she had whilst visiting New Zealand. Hapuku Kitchen was created by husband-and-wife team Chris and Fiona who in their previous lives managed Hapuku Lodge & Tree Houses, with Fiona also being a finalist on New Zealand’s MasterChef. Their aim was to create a kitchen and cooking school in Kaikoura with an emphasis on reconnecting to the land and sea whilst inviting guests into their home. Saadika especially enjoyed foraging for the produce which then ended up on her plate after a hands-on cooking class.

During the flight she got to admire views of Mt Cook and the Southern Alps and was able to walk on Fox Glacier with a special landing. The views all the way to the ocean were an unexpected surprise!

Harriet Stewart from A&K’s UK office recently returned from a visit to Australia where she said of the Australian team “they really are experts in everything to do with Australia & New Zealand. Before I headed back to the UK and knowing how much I love wildlife, they arranged for me to visit Moonlit Sanctuary Wildlife Conservation Park where the highlight was hand feeding a wallaby. This was followed by a visit to Phillip Island where I got to witness one of nature’s marvels – the penguin parade.”

A&K’s DMC Product Executive Sophie Culot got the chance to visit glorious Queenstown recently. With its food and wine offerings along with adrenaline ju**ie experiences, there’s something for everyone.
Sophie visited one of the region’s oldest vineyards Gibbston Valley with its wine cave tours, tastings and bike trails which showcase the local landscape. Also on her travels was an adventurous 4WD experience crossing the Arrow River and panning for gold. Lastly a thrilling Luge ride down 1,600 metres of tunnels and dippers, all with stunning views was the best way to cap off a great trip.

A&K’s DMC Product Manager Gabrielle McCarthy was lucky enough to experience the iconic Freycinet Experience Walk on Tasmania’s east coast. Whilst walking along the same ancient bush tracks the Oyster Bay Tribe walked 30,000 years ago, Gabrielle’s highlights included the spectacular natural environment with its ever-changing landscape, the indigenous stories and spotting a wombat on the beach! Not to mention the amazing guides and lodge hosts, the incredible food and Friendly Beaches Lodge, which was a warm and welcoming base to relax and share stories at the end of an adventurous day.

A&K welcomes back Tracy Anderson to the New Zealand team! When asked what her favourite A&K experience is, she said taking a scenic helicopter flight to the top of Mt Tarawera for the incredible landscapes. Tracy’s hot new spot in NZ is The Carlin Hotel with its picturesque views, making it the place to be in Queenstown.
And her top tip for agents is to try and include both Milford and Doubtful Sounds for double the beauty in any trip!

It’s currently whale season in many parts of Australia, as these majestic creatures come up from Antarctica to Australia’s warmer waters to breed and calve. You will mainly find humpback whales on the east and west coastlines while along the south coast, you’re more likely to see southern right whales. It’s a truly magnificent sight to see them splashing about so close to the shoreline. The season runs from around June until October.

Coober Pedy is a fascinating opal mining town in South Australia’s outback and is the opal capital of the world. Due to its extreme heat in summer, approximately 80% of the inhabitants live underground. Visitors can explore an underground church, dine, sleep and eat underground and witness the lunar-like landscapes that go as far as the eye can see.

Queensland’s stunning Whitehaven Beach is one of the most beautiful and untouched beaches in the world. Situated on Whitsunday Island, one of 74 islands in the Whitsundays, it’s popular for its pristine white sand and warm turquoise coloured water. The powdery soft sand, which is 98% silica, doesn’t get hot like normal sand and will even polish your jewellery for you!
