After 4.5 years of calling myself a Grump, I finally got down to Melbourne to immerse myself in some of Grumpy’s amazing work and spent some quality time with our Melburnian contingent, Jason & Darren. Hopped up on caffeine, we kicked the morning off at ACMI to check out the Story of the Moving Image exhibition with wonder and delight. Seeing the evolution of technology was a highlight, along with Edit Line and Constellations. From there, we skipped over to The Arts Centre to step back in time at the Australian Music Vault for a sensory experience of Australia’s rich music history. Following a little pit stop, I peeled off to Melbourne Museum to encounter the terrifying Triceratops: Fate of the Dinosaurs exhibition, and got an important reminder of road safety at Road to Zero. Last stop, the Australian Sports Museum for some fun and giggles at Game On! A jam-packed day full of memorable and impactful immersive experiences. A great reminder to get down more often, and enjoy all Melbourne has to offer! - Charlie, People & Culture Lead
Introducing The Bondi Story Room, at the glorious new Bondi Pavilion! Where history meets innovation in a touch screen mural of the iconic beach community we know and love. Stretching from the ocean to the shoreline and surrounding streets, the mural encompasses Bondi’s rich cultural and historical value. It features community-sourced stories from the early days of Indigenous culture all the way to the modern-day bustling beach scene 🌊
This bespoke interactive experience consists of an 8-metre-wide projection of a beautifully rendered illustration of the Bondi coastline. The entire wall is touch-enabled with a custom IR frame, supporting six concurrent users. Woah! 💫 To round off the experience an ambient soundscape is played over 4 speakers, with sounds changing from street to beach based on where visitors are located in the room.
Submit your own story to be part of Bondi’s ongoing narrative via the link in our bio — and come see it for yourself!

Introducing a new kind of digital experience for FIFA Museum presented by Hyundai *drumroll 🥁*. Grumps are proud to present a bespoke virtual museum experience as part of our work on FIFA Museum’s latest exhibition for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™. Working with the talented crew at Unbound, we created a web-based 3D immersive virtual experience that brings audiences on a journey through the history of the FIFA Women’s World Cup™. The experience seeks to celebrate the pioneers of the women’s game, uncover the stories behind the artefacts and inspire future generations.
Using photogrammetry technology, physical artefacts from the museum are brought into the digital space as high polygon, realistic 3D objects. A plethora of artefacts and match balls from the last three decades were captured for the digital space — all with 360 degree rotation. Yes, you can spin them all the way around! The beautiful virtual landscape is complemented by inspiring sound effects and music, courtesy of our friends at ISM Studios. The experience is CMS managed with an updatable content set, opening the doors for many future opportunities in bringing physical museum spaces to wider audiences via the digital space!

We’re proud to share this special film we produced for our friends at Google Cloud — it’s a story about connectivity to people and place. Allow us to introduce the newest subsea cable in town: Topaz, the first-ever fibre cable connecting Canada and Asia. Check out the full video here: https://lnkd.in/gy6cV92V.
In reciprocity to the First Nation peoples of Tseshaht and Hupacasath, whose territory these subsea cables run through, we produced two additional short films documenting a snapshot of their lives. We are grateful and humbled to have had this opportunity, and encourage you all to watch these videos.

As always, a ship is nothing without its crew, so a huge thank you to our production partners Pink Buffalo Films and Mr+Positive Tokyo.
Why are we called Grumpy Sailor?
Ahoy there! The Grumps are back on deck, re-energised and ready to embark on a fabulous 2023. To kick off the year we thought we’d answer a question we’re often asked: Why are we called Grumpy Sailor? ⛵️
“When you try to go back to your earliest memory you usually go back to a sensation lost in time and space; the feel of snow on your face, the warmth of mum's embrace. The earliest memory for our founder was the rough wooden texture of a carved wooden sailor. We are named after that sailor as a reminder that if we can create something that someone can truly feel, then we can create something that someone will truly remember.”

Grumpy Inspo October 2022
What’s inspiring our work? October, 2022
Although Augmented Reality (AR) has been floating around for a while now, we’ll be honest — we haven’t actually tinkered with it all too often in our projects. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with app-based AR (they can offer delightful experiences), the need to install an app before engaging with the experience creates a barrier of entry that shatters an audience’s sense of immersion. This coupled with challenges rendering detailed graphics, is a significant consideration for designing immersive experiences.
However, developments in web-based AR opens the door to many new possibilities in creative experience design. It breaks down the barrier of entry by making the AR experience accessible from a mobile web browser (no need to download any apps) — the user simply scans a code that takes them to the AR experience on their phone’s browser. Admittedly, this process isn’t always quite as seamless as it sounds — web pages sometimes take ages to load, camera permissions stall the experience —
But the potential tech developments have our curly curiosity tentacles tingling.
Just last month, 8th wall introduced location-based WebAR experiences using Lightship Visual Positioning System, which allows AR content to be anchored to streetscapes, landmarks, parks, paths, and shopfronts around the world. Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/dYd9jbeF. This technology combined with the reduced barrier of entry for web-based AR is a fantastic development for creative experience design. The power to activate real-world environments in a seamless user experience of interactivity, immersion, and virtuality certainly rocks our Grumpy socks!

Bondi Story Room Behind the Scenes
Here at Grumps, we’re thrilled to be working with Waverley Council on the exciting revamped Bondi Pavilion which will open next month! We’ve created Bondi Story Room, an interactive digital exhibit which brings to life fascinating stories of Bondi’s past; chronicling significant people, milestones and events. We custom built an 8m x 3m infrared touch frame with bespoke programming to turn the wall into a high-res, super wide touchscreen. At 3 x 4k resolution and 8 channels of soundscape, it’s hands down the biggest seamless touchscreen we’ve ever created!
Shout outs to Tonkin Zulaikha Greer Architects for inviting us aboard, and the insanely talented Matt Tillman (@pixelninja.design on Insta) for your incredible work on the project!

All in a days work for team Grumps! Here you can see our dev team testing the use of large screens to throw different coloured lights from parts of the screen. With this, we were able to light up people’s faces and bodies to create visually interesting experiences for their Flip Book creations. This was part of our award winning experience, The Story of the Moving Image at ACMI.

Triceratops: Fate of the Dinosaurs was an absolute dream exhibition for us, because…well, who doesn’t want to work with dinosaurs!? The Grumpy team helped turn this traditional exhibit into a playground of light and sound, with over 40 audio channels mixed into a truly immersive soundscape. Working with the museum curators and other specialists, we had to check the animations were all scientifically accurate. So every dinosaur, leaf and even the bugs were rigorously scrutinised and refined. Whilst all along ensuring that Horridus was the star of the show. Take a closer look the next time you’re there!
