Speech from Chairman of UCB
Sharif Zahir

Dear Colleagues, Distinguished Guests, and Esteemed Stakeholders,It is with profound honor and a deep sense of responsibility that I stand before you today as the newly elected Chairman of United Commercial Bank (UCB).

I begin by congratulating all of us on being citizens of a recently liberated Bangladesh. The recent student revolution, which cost us over 400 lives, has brought an end to a brutal, autocratic regime and heralded a new dawn of freedom and democracy.

We must never forget the courage of individuals like Abu Sayeed, Mahfuzur Rahman Mugdho, and others who laid down their lives for a just cause. Their actions remind us of the values that should guide us—integrity, bravery, and a commitment to justice. These were the same values expressed by my father and previous
Vice-Chairman of UCB Late Mr. Humayun Zahir, for which he had tosacrifice his life in April 1993 in order to protect the interests of the general shareholders and depositors of UCB.

UCB has a rich history as one of the oldest private commercial banks in the country. Founded by visionary leaders, UCB has grown to become a significant financial institution with one of the highest asset sizes and a robust trade finance wing. I have had the privilege of serving on the Board of UCB for over 20 years, and I was honored to serve as Vice Chairman in the past. During these years, we have seen tremendous growth by placing the right management in leadership roles and steering the bank through numerous challenges.

However, we must acknowledge the serious challenges that have recently come to light. The looting of the bank by members of the Board of Directors during the time period October 2018 to August 2024 is a severe breach of trust—one that has shaken the foundation of this institution. In our recent meeting with the Governor of Bangladesh Bank and senior management, we made a solemn pledge to work together to uncover the wrongdoings and to bring back the money that was illicitly transferred abroad. We discussed innovative strategies to identify and reclaim the assets purchased abroad, ensuring that the depositors of UCB and other banks are made whole.

Moreover, we will closely examine our capital adequacy, gain a true picture of our non-performing loans (NPL), and work in collaboration with Bangladesh Bank to ensure the financial stability of UCB. As part of this commitment, we will immediately begin a forensic audit to identify and rectify the misappropriations and irregularities that have occurred.

Additionally, we will present a comprehensive roadmap to Bangladesh Bank, detailing how we intend to restore the bank to its former strength with good management, transparency, and accountability.

To the management and all employees of UCB, my message is clear: Continue to operate business as usual. Your duties are distinct from the actions of the Board, and you should carry out your responsibilities without fear, provided you have acted with integrity. Together, we will work to make UCB great again, restoring it to its rightful position as the leading private bank in Bangladesh. Let us build a bank that is not only financially strong but also a model of integrity and respect in the banking sector. We have the talent, the vision, and the commitment to make this happen.
Together, we will transform UCB into the number one bank in the private sector, setting standards that others will strive to follow.

Let us come together, inspired by the sacrifices of our nation’s youth, to rebuild and lead UCB into a future defined by integrity, growth, and success. Together, we will make UCB not just a bank but a beacon of excellence in Bangladesh’s financial
landscape.

Thank you, and I look forward to achieving these great milestones with all of you.

Ananta Group is investing $70 million in a new synthetic knit fabric manufacturing facility in Narsingdi, named Ananta Knitwear Limited, to boost its export market for activewear, sportswear, and intimate apparel.

Despite challenges like dollar shortages and inconsistent utilities, the facility aims for $100 million in export turnover over five years. Supported by $40 million in financing from the Asian Development Bank and the ILX Fund, construction starts next month with production by late 2025, creating 2,000 jobs.

The eco-friendly factory will have a daily capacity of 60 tones and generate 2MW of solar energy. Ananta Group projects $700 million in annual exports by 2029, up from the current $400 million.
