Zhabdrung Kuchoe, observed on the 10th day of the third Bhutanese month every year marks the day when Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal the founder of Bhutan passed away at the Punakha Dzong in 1651. Bhutan commemorates this day to pay homage to Zhabdrung as the leader who brought unity to the country. Bhutanese people from all walks of life offer prayers of gratitude to Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal.
SNIPPET OF PARO TSECHU/ FESTIVAL : One of the most revered and important events is the Paro Tsechu (11th to 15th day of the 2nd month of the Bhutanese calendar every year). Paro Tshechu is also one of the most popular festivals in the country.People from all over the country flock into the festival premises in their best dresses to witness and get blessings during the five day Tshechu. Tourists from far and wide add to both the number and variety of people attending the Tshechu. Various Mask Dances and Folk Dances are performed both by the monks and the laymen from the community.
Even in a globalized world, Bhutan is still a country which is less traveled and maintains relative remoteness. Localized in the Himalayas, the kingdom offers, besides its natural beauties, fascinating cultural sights, particularly secular and sacral architecture. For most foreigners, the omnipresence of depictions of phalli, always erected and often ejaculating on many walls of traditional houses is a stunning impression. The popularity of these displays goes back to the "Holy Madman" Drukpa Kunley (1455-1529) who made generous use of his pen*s to fight demons, convert women to Buddhism and mock the religious establishment. Although there is a vast written and oral tradition on the religious and historical significance of the phallus-symbol, for most Bhutanese today it merely means a sign of good luck and an instrument to ward off evil spirits. #bhutantravelbureau

Punakha Dzong in Spring evenings
Beautiful Punakha Dzong in Spring evenings 💐
The Punakha Dzong (the palace of great happiness or bliss), is the administrative centre of Punakha District in Punakha, Bhutan.
The dzong was constructed by Ngawang Namgyal, in 1637–38. It is the second oldest and second largest dzong in Bhutan and one of its most majestic structures.
The dzong houses the sacred relics of the southern Drukpa Lineage of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, including the Rangjung Kasarpani and the sacred remains of Ngawang Namgyal and the tertoen Pema Lingpa.
The Dzong is located at the confluence of the Pho Chhu (father) and Mo Chhu (mother) rivers in the Punakha–Wangdue valley. The source of the Mo chu river is in the northern hills of Ligshi and Laya in Bhutan, and in Tibet.
The Pho Chu River is fed by glaciers in the Lunana region of the Punakha valley. After the confluence of these two rivers, the main river is known as Puna Tsang chu.
In view of the healthy climate in the region, Punakha is the winter capital of Bhutan. The head of the clergy of Bhutan with his entourage of monks spend the winter in this dzong. Jacaranda trees grow around the dzong, blooming with mauve flowers in the spring.
Punakha is also the center of Bhutan’s longest suspension bridge (Punakha Suspension Bridge) and is about 7.5 km (4.5 miles) by car to Chimi Lhakhang, the Divine Madman’s fertility temple.

PUNAKHA TSECHU
GLIMPSE OF PUNAKHA TSHECHU
At this time of year, Punakha Dzong courtyard would be adorned with silks and petals. The monks preparing for mask dance, people would be flocking towards the fortress wearing their best attire to witness TSECHU but alas the pandemic!
The Punakha Tshechu is one of the most popular Tshechus in the country. It is held right after the popular Punakha Drubchen.
In this video , we present to you Raksha Marcham, The Judgment of Death Mask Dance. This dance is one of the most interesting of the Tshechu and it is extremely didactic.
The Tsechu ends with unfurling of the thongdrol (a large tapestry) of Guru Rinpoche is the main attraction of the festival. It is believed that a mere sight of the thongdrol liberates an onlooker and cleanses him of his sins.
Tsechu in BHUTAN is one of the biggest festivals in the district and locality. Tourists from around the world travel to Bhutan to be part of this grand event.
