Chorten Kora is an important stupa built in 18th century by Lama Ngawang Lodrö, near the Kholongchu River in Trashi Yangtse, in East Bhutan.
The stupa is modeled after the famous Boudhanath stupa in Nepal popularly known as Jarung Khashor. It is believed that present site was harmful by the demon, in order to subdue the demon a stupa was built.
Gomphu Kora is located under Trashi Yangtse eastern Bhutan near the river bank, as per the legend the Gomphu Kora goes back to the 8th century AD. It is believed that an evil spirit named Myongkhapa escaped from Samye in Tibet when Guru Padmasambhava, who was spreading the Buddhist Dharma in the Himalayas.
An evil spirit Myongkhapa escaped and went to the Kholongchhu stream (Trashi Yangtse). The Guru Padmasambhawa followed the evil and subdued at Gomphu Kora. Gomphu means “Meditation Cave” and Kora means “Circumambulation”. The name is derived from a cave formed out of a rock-face next to a temple that has been built as a tribute to this sacred site. The most attraction of Gomphu Kora is the circumambulation. The local devotees sing a song “Go around Gomphu Kora today, for tomorrow may be too late”, Gomphu Kora festival attracts all flocks of Bhutanese and from neighboring Arunachael Pradesh (India).
Kurje Lhakhang(8th century temple) is located under Bumthang Dzongkhag. As per the legends,the king of Bumthang region in the 8th century fell terribly ill after falling out with the local guardian deity. Desperate to recover from the curse, he invited Guru Rinpoche to Bumthang to help the King regain his health. Guru Rinpoche meditated in a cave to subdue the local deity and obliged in restoring the health of the King. Imprints of Guru’s body remained in that cave and thus the name Kurje which means the imprint of the body.
The Kurje has three temples, first temple called the Guru Lhakhang, is the oldest and was built in 1652 by Mingyur Tenpa, the Trongsa Penlop (Local Governor). Second temple was built by Sir Ugyen Wangchuck, the First Hereditary Monarch of Bhutan, called Sampa Lhundrup Lhakhang, in 1900, while he was the Trongsa Penlop (and yet to be crowned King). The third temple was built by HRH The third temple was built in 1984 by Ashi Kesang Wangchuck (Queen to the Third King).
The Kurje Lhakhang is considered one of the holiest site and an important place to visit by the pilgrimage of the Buddhist.
The Trongsa Dzong (fortress) was established in 1644; in the local dialect, Trongsa (Krong Sar) literally means a "new village." The Dzong was once the Wangchuck dynasty's seat of power. Before becoming the King of Bhutan, the ‘heir to the throne’ is first appointed the Trongsa Penlop (governor) then the Crown Prince, and finally ascends the Golden Throne. The Dzong is strategically perched high above the Mangde Chu (river) gorges on a mountain ridge. The watchtower of Trongsa is converted into a museum dedicated to the Wangchuck dynasty and serves as a good place to reflect about the history of the kingdom.
