The mountains surrounding the airport can be up to 18,000 feet (5,486 meters) high, while Paro International Airport itself sits at an elevation of 7,364 feet (2,245 meters). This in itself affects and restricts the performance of aircraft, and pilots also say that the runway is only really visible for a few brief moments before landing.

Sacred Kurje Drupchu the Blessed water of Kurje in Bumthang

Guru Rinpoche original extracted the Kurje Drupchu or blessed water. He brought it forth after a seven-day meditation with Monmo Tashi Khyuedron as his partner. According to the Kurje catalogue, Guru Rinpoche extracted the water as an offering and to provide benefits to future beings. The Drupchu is believed to cure various diseases and cleanse impurities and it's efficacy is well attested throughout the country.

The water emerges from a small cave located a big pine trees, approximately a ten-minute walk above Kurje Guru Lhakhang. The flow doesn't fluctuate but rather remains constant throughout the year. Thanks to its functional benefits, it is widely considered the most sacred water in Bhutan and has a growing reputation in other countries. Many lamas and members of Royal family use the spring for their drinking water when in the area. The springs pours water with a distinct colour, and thought it's temperature is cool in the summer, it's warm in winter. Due to these many attributes qualities, people even today come from near and far taste and collect the Drupchu.

Jakar Yugyal Dzong, commonly known as Jakar Dzong sits on a ridge overlooking Jakar village of Chamkhar valley in Bumthang, and translates to ‘fortress of white bird’. The dzong played a critical role in ancient times as a fortress of defense for the east-central region. It is believed that when the 14th century saint Lam Ngagi Wangchuk came to Bhutan to spread Buddhism, he saw a white bird perched on the ridge, and the location was subsequently chosen for the dzong.

The Thimphu Dromchoe commences today for three days upon conclusion of the 11-day annual Lhamoi Drubchhen, a rite performed to appease Pelden Lhamo (the Goddess Mahakali), one of the three main spiritual protectors of the Drukpa Kargyu school of Buddhism. This sacred Drubchhen was instituted between 1705 and 1709 by Kuenga Gyaltshen, the first reincarnation of Jampel Dorji, the son of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal.

The Lham Tsom dance, a highlight of the Thimphu Domchoe festival, is performed in the courtyard of the Tashichhodzong.

We encourage the general public to come witness the sacred masked dances and receive blessings at the Thimphu Tashichhodzong.

“As you walk and eat and travel, be where you are. ...

The Buddha Dordenma is located atop a hill in Kuenselphodrang Nature Park and overlooks the Southern entrance to Thimphu Valley. The statue fulfils an ancient prophecy dating back to the 8th century A.D that was discovered by Terton Pema Lingpa (Religious Treasure Discoverer) and is said to emanate an aura of peace and happiness to the entire world.
