Guiding in Gwaii Haanas is complex. The list of skills required for this job is almost endless. We LOVE what we do and spend considerable time training our returning and new staff every year to ensure that trips are as safe, fun and exciting as possible.

Spring is here, and it feels like summer is just around the corner!
April and May on Haida Gwaii invented the saying, "If you do not like the weather, wait five minutes." Hail, rain, wind, and lots of sunshine make for lots of rainbows.
We also welcome the grey whales this time of year. They travel up from warmer waters to forage for food and stop by Haida Gwaii on their journey north. Gray whales are like cattle on an open range; they eat one area down and then move on to find more food. These baleen whales are opportunistic feeders, eating what they can, but primarily feed on amphipod crustaceans.
We see them often from the beach in front of our office, but only sometimes while we're on the boats. Humpbacks are the most commonly sighted whale while we're exploring.

"Rising Tide" Haida Title Lands Agreement
On April 6th, 2024, over 500 Haida Citizens voted 95% in favour of Gaayhllxid • Gíhlagalgang "Rising Tide" Haida Title Lands Agreement set out by the Council of the Haida Nation and the Province of British Columbia. This groundbreaking agreement sets 50 years of hard work in motion to make things right. To formally acknowledge Haida Title and Rights for Haida Gwaii, which were never ceded, sold, released, surrendered or transferred.
Yesterday, April 15th, 2024, Gaayhllxid • Gíhlagalgang "Rising Tide" Haida Title Lands Agreement was signed on Haida Gwaii. This is the first of its kind. It will see all B.C. provincial crown land become Haida land.
Haida Gwaii has always been Haida land, but there has been no formal agreement between the crown and the Haida. This change in government is a step towards reconciliation, one of self-determination, which has yet to be historically given to indigenous peoples across Canada. Reconciliation is a complex and lengthy process that will take continued tenacity and determination. It is no small task to be told no at every effort to be stewards of your land and home and continue to push to make things right.
As a non-Haida business operating on Haida land, we are grateful to be part of this journey. Gwaii Haanas was a landmark step in co-management, and now, 30 years later, indigenous management of all the lands and waters of Haida Gwaii is another step in that journey. It is humbling to be able to present and enable visitors to experience the power of the forests and ocean of Haida Gwaii.
This agreement is a step in changing how governance in Canada is done. It will not erase hundreds of years of violence and wrongdoing; it cannot change the past, but it will change the future.

For those days when the cool ocean breeze or salty spray dripping down your face just isn't enough to keep you cool. These high-speed fans can increase the wind speed to resemble sitting behind a jet plane.

Flying to Haida Gwaii?
The Sandspit airport's name has now changed to "K'il Kun Xidgwangs Daanaay." The video below teaches correct pronunciation.

We're excited to see these little buddies this season
Puffin facts:
- Their beaks are bioluminescent
- Part of the beak falls off in the winter, new season, new look
- Both the tufted and the horned puffins live on Haida Gwaii
- They "fly" underwater using their wings and use their feet to steer
- We often see them in the southern half of Gwaii Haanas in June and July

Kelp! I need somebody, Kelp! Not just anybody! In this video, one of our Guides Julian shows us some bull kelp; "This is an annual, grows every year. Starts as slices of free-floating form in the ocean finds the rock that it likes, that it wants to attach itself to, and then hooks onto the rock. It can grow up to 36 meters in length, so very, very tall. And when it's at its fastest growing stage, it can grow two to three feet a day!" Meet the Lions of the Sea - The Stella Variety Known for sitting on rocks and screaming at each other, these wonderful beasts are common on Haida Gwaii, despite being close to the threatened species list. They are known to frequent Garson Rock, Cape St James and SG̱ang Gwaay. We also often spot them on Helmet Island through the winter months, and they can't resist a good scratch on the Skedans Islands in the spring! Who do you want to relax in the sunshine with next summer? Perhaps not engaging in heated arguments, but definitely savouring the ocean breeze! #haidagwaii

We love being back out on the water exploring Haida Gwaii and Gwaii Haanas and, as always, feel so incredibly grateful for the opportunity to operate on these waters. We can’t wait to show you. On all our boat tours, we travel on fast, stable Hurricane Zodiac boats, perfectly suited to the variable weather and sea conditions around Haida Gwaii. Our one-day tour travels around Louise Island, and our Two Day and Four Day tours provide an opportunity to travel deep into Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, National Marine Conservation Area Reserve and Haida Heritage Site (“Gwaii Haanas”). When you thought our float lodge couldn’t get any more magical… then it turned into a winter wonderland thanks to the recent snow on Haida Gwaii. You can bet the boat ride out there was a little chilly! 🥶 #haidagwaii
This video of a whale feeding (and possibly bubble feeding) was taken at the northeastern mouth of the Houston Stewart Channel on one of our 4-day tours this past summer. While we don't promise you wildlife sightings, this area is full of life, with lots of nutrient-rich upwelling of cold water coming from the west coast, so it is prevalent to see whales feeding in this area, and therefore we navigate in on all our 4-day tours. As always, we followed all regulations, including distancing from all marine mammals, with the whale swimming up to the boat once we had stopped.
