Walia Ibex (previous post).

While researching, I came across this notification: The Walia ibex is considered to be endangered by the IUCN and needs further conservation measures to survive. Since no captive population is kept anywhere in the world, the IUCN recommends capturing a few individuals to form the nucleus of a captive breeding group. However, they must be doing something right, as the IUCN mentions on their site, that their population is increasing (update).

The Amazon rainforest is on fire.

This year, between January and August, almost 73,000 fires have been recorded, which is nearly double 2018's total of nearly 40,000 fires. It's a record high. Since Thursday, almost 10,000 news fires have started.

One of the reasons for the massive increase in fires is human activity, and Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro does not care. Dismissing concerns about the amount of fires in the Amazon, he said, "I used to be called Captain Chainsaw. Now I am Nero, setting the Amazon aflame." He said it was just the time of the year when farmers use fire to clear land. Since taking power, Bolsonaro has also hampered what government agencies can do to protect the rainforest.

The fires have created a layer of smoke estimated to be 1.2 million square miles wide, and the loss of forest is devastating for mitigating global warming. The rainforest is meant to absorb carbon, not produce it. The Amazon rainforest alone supplies 20% of our planet's oxygen and is one of our best defenses against climate change. 📷

Ethiopia named as world’s most welcoming country

Ethiopia has been named as the world’s most welcoming country in an open poll on popular travel site Rough Guides.

The site describes Ethiopia as “profoundly beautiful” in a poll that supports East Africa’s rise as a tourist destination.

East Africa shines in poll results

Rough Guides took to social media to ask its followers for their pick of the most welcoming countries they’ve experienced. With more than 340,000 followers on Facebook and Twitter alone, the popular website has plenty of travel enthusiasts to call upon for feedback – and East Africa stands out on the list of results:

Ethiopia
India
Uganda
Colombia
Japan
Indonesia
Kenya
Myanmar
Finland
Bolivia

Three East African countries make the top ten, alongside two representatives from Southeast Asia and South America respectively. While Ethiopia and Uganda take top and third spots in the poll, sitting either side of India in second place.

‘Profoundly beautiful’

Ethiopia is emerging as a potential leader for tourism in Africa, already showing signs of becoming East Africa’s hottest destination. Last year, Ethiopia was named as the world’s best tourism destination by the European Council on Tourism and Trade.

Now it’s being called the most welcoming country in one of the most popular online travel resources.

Rough Guides praises Ethiopia for its beauty and rich culture:

Top of the list sits Ethiopia, a profoundly beautiful East African country with a history that stretches back many thousands of years. It was never colonised, so the tribal customs and hospitable traditions you can see here are largely just as they’ve always been. Take the Ethiopian coffee ceremony: the women of the household meticulously roast, grind and boil the aromatic beans, before presenting three consecutive cups of exceptionally fresh coffee to their guests. The process can last for hours, but it’s considered a real mark of friendship. – Rough Guides

Despite unrest in parts of Ethiopia over the last couple of years, tourism numbers continue to rise and investment – both foreign and domestic – paints a positive picture for tourism in the East African country.

Ashenda (Tigrigna: ኣሸንዳ)
Is a girls and young women's festival celebrated in northern Ethiopia among Orthodox Christianity followers. It is the traditional ceremony of the Tigray People.

Ashenda

Also called: Girls' Day
Observed by: Ethiopia
Type: Religious
Frequency: Annual
Related to: Filseta

It is typically celebrated between (16-26) of August, every year. Its length varies from three days to one month depending on the locale (shorter in urban areas, longer in rural areas). The holiday is mainly celebrated by Tigrayans.

Annual Ashenda Festival Tigray
Ashenda is a unique Tigraian traditional festival which takes place in August to mark the ending of fasting called filseta. This event is mostly for girls and young women, which they await very eagerly every year. It is unique to the people in the state of Tigray in Northern Ethiopia. The name of the festival "Ashenda" comes from the name of a tall grass that the girls make into a skirt and wear it around their waist as decoration.

Ashenda Girls in Tigray State
Ashenda being a unique Tigraian traditional festival exudes remarkable religious, cultural and traditional practices carried on for centuries. Tigray young ladies and girls enjoy Ashenda music and dance.
The young women and girls dress the best traditional dresses called “Tilfi” which is a cotton dress decorated with amazing embroidery from the neck to toe in front of the dress. The girls also adorn themselves with array of beautiful jewelry.

After they gather in the village or city center they divide in to small groups and they go house to house singing and playing their drums. They stop at every house and sing and dance for the people in the houses. It is customary for people to give them money, food and drinks and other items for their efforts. They continue the whole day going from house to house and occasionally stopping in a village or city center and singing and dancing for awhile before they go on again on their tour.

A week or so after the celebrations start, the event comes to an end with all the girls from the village or the town coming together in the center of the town or a village singing and dancing until sun down. This time the young boys join in more like spectators than active players.

Ashenda Girls in Tigray State, Northern Ethiopia:
HAIR STYLE of A Beautiful Tigraian Woman

The women of Tigray are known for their beauty in Ethiopia. Women in Tigray might wear variety of hairstyles based on their age and marital status. Young girls shave their hair on the side of their head, leaving some hair at the back of the head and around the head. The shaved part slowly closes over the years, by the time a young lady is married and has a child, she officially enters womanhood and wears the fully braided hairdo. There are many styles of braiding from the very fine called ”Gilbich” to a course one called ”Albaso”. All the hairdo styles show the most amazing artistic skills of the people developed for ages.
The Tigray Women hair style is unique to the people of Tigray. It takes a long time to do the fine hair braids and it is not done by just anybody; there are women who specialize in the skill and that is what they do for a living. When it is done it looks more like an art, than it does a hair style. The jewelry that worn by Tigray women is also very unique to the region, it is usually made mainly of gold and silver and sometimes copper.

Even though, modern hair style can be seen in many cities and town of Tigray, most women stick to the thousands year old traditional style.
