The making of a man:
a bull jumping ceremony with Ethiopia's Hamer tribe.
They have been repeatedly whipped with birch sticks by their male peers as they take part in a traditional coming of age ceremony.
Thick welts cover their bodies but instead of screaming in agony they taunt their abusers to beat them harder. The greater the physical pain, the more devotion they are believed to show to the boy who is about to become a man.
Either side of the long summer rains, communities across the Omo Valley in south-western Ethiopia will gather for the event with a drinks( local drinks Cheka and Areki) I am trying this all time here
In the shade of a tree next to a dry riverbed, the teenage bull jumper stares silently into the distance contemplating the task ahead.
If he manages to run across the backs of a line of cattle, he becomes known as a Maza - accomplished one - and is entitled to take the first of several brides.
If he fails, he must return to his village and wait a year to try again.
