Le Paris de la modernité (1905-1925) is a must-see show at the Petit Palais in Paris. Everyone who mattered is here, from Stravinsky to the dancers in costumes in The Rites of Spring to Paul Poiret and Louis Cartier, not to mention the Cubism of Braque and Picasso. Such genius on display before the lights went out again on Europe with the consequences we know.

I just visited the newly opened Quai de la Photo on the Seine, next to the Joseph Baker open air swimming pool. The exhibition by Martin Parr is small but entertaining. The overall atmosphere needs a makeover however. On a warm summer day, the place is empty. I suggest some music, and smiling wait staff at the bar and restaurant, and a greater emphasis on the ancillary activities such as photography lessons and boat cruises.inparis

Pastels, a new exhibition at the Orsay Museum, is worth the detour. It shows the variety and surprises of the medium and how it translates the people and places we often take for granted.

These photos are an introduction to the Museum of the Grand Siècle—-the 17th century which began with Henri IV and ended with Louis XIV. The scale model is the future museum designed by Rudy Rucciotti of MUCEM fame which will be built next to the Parc de Saint Cloud. The paintings, sculptures and decorative arts are shown in a small museum in Sceaux to whet visitors ’ appetite. The core collection is a donation by Pierre Rosenberg, former president of the Louvre and expert on Poussin. The rest will come through long-term loans and acquisitions. Projected cost:150 million euros. Due date: December 2026.

Today I had the thrill of discovery at the BNF—the new museum at the National Library of France. Here you can see unbelievable treasures including the throne of King Dagobert, the manuscript of Simone de Beauvoir’s The Second S*x written in longhand and the musical notations of Mozart’s Don Giovanni. I have a researcher’s card for a year, this giving me many chances for other visits.

The magnificently restored Cluny Museum is definitely worth the detour if you live in Paris or if you have a thing for Medieval art and architecture. You can visit the former chapel of the abbots of Cluny, admire the beautiful golden rose and splendid statuary from the Sainte Chapelle and learn about the daily life of feudal lords and ladies.

This is one of the most peaceful places in France: the American Cemetery at Coleville sur Mer. Beautifully maintained, it offers many surprises including graves for women who died in France, two sons of Theodore Roosevelt’s, as 147 tombs of Jewish soldiers who fought and died over DDay. Let us honor and remember these brave souls.
