What a fun line up of activities we have had over the past few week’s here in Newton Court. We have had indoor tennis (when the weather prevented play in the courtyard; glass sun-catcher painting; strawberry picking on the Gower followed by strawberries and cream and Pimm’s and lemonade for Wimbledon; a sea-side themed afternoon with paddling pool, buckets, spades and of course ice-creams and some fairy cake making. Quite a line-up!

It is safe to say that in amongst such a medley of activities alongside our weekly crossword session, art class, knit and natter and in-house hair salon trips that there is ‘something for everyone’! Our residents also enjoyed the company and fellowship of quite a number of visitors recently for Newton Court’s ‘mini fraternal’.

Fair Haven Refurbishment

The building works, much like the British summer, started hesitantly mid-June. However, now that we are in July, we find we are surrounded by the signs, sounds and results of the refurbishment being fully underway.
The residents are enjoying the ‘people watching’ and finding what is happening next and the staff team are all enjoying rather varied working days.

Our wellbeing team and volunteers are all doing an amazing job of providing activities away from the busiest areas and there have been trips and lunches out. Any extra volunteers would always be very welcome, although as you can see from two of the photos, we work them hard!

Never too busy for ice cream as you will also see – we are keeping the workers happy too!

We still have a few rooms available for anyone wishing to have a summer respite stay by the seaside, if you know anyone who may be interested, please get in touch.

We welcomed quite a few visitors here in Newton Court for the occasion of our summer barbeque - garden party. A gazebo had been erected and decorated with colourful bunting and the pathway arch was adorned with pretty green balloons which made the garden an enticing place to find a perch for those who braved the fine yet windy weather.

Residents enjoyed mingling with our visitors and those who found outdoors a little too chilly sat in the conservatory. Here they observed all the comings and goings and listened to the music being played on the keyboard outside. A delightful menu of barbecued homemade burgers, hotdogs, chicken kebabs, chicken drumsticks, delicious side salads and the ever-popular lemon tiramisu or carrot cake was served.

It is lovely to have these events in our beautiful grounds as it encourages residents to engage with and enjoy the beauty of God’s creation which is so uplifting! We also really benefit from visitors supporting these events. Our residents enjoy the friendly interaction, chatter and in many cases ongoing support and care that they provide. We have a few more events planned for the remainder of the summer so plenty more for those at Newton Court to look forward to God willing.

We have had quite a few lovely days and fun activities taking place in recent days here at Newton Court. A handful of intrepid explorers set off on the ‘Gruffalo Trail’ in a nearby woods which fortunately has a meandering flat path. The residents who went on this trip had a lovely time exploring and spending time amongst the trees.

The beautiful weather was inspiration for another very enjoyable activity that was held in our conservatory, with plenty of fresh air floating through the open doors. The residents took great delight in making some fanciful strawberry plant fairy gardens, a wonderful form of escapism! They delved deep into fairy land arranging wooden log stepping stones, pebbles, trees, shrubs, plant pots, miniature toadstools, fairies, hedgehogs, squirrels, rabbits and their own hand-painted toadstools. One fairy even sat perched with her feet in her very own terracotta pond – how sweet!

We have quite a few exciting activities planned over the summer ( the residents here are richly blessed by the Lord) so keep your ear to the ground and we will keep you posted!

We have a wonderful team of volunteers who support us in many ways at Fair Haven both on and off site, physically and spiritually and for whom we are very grateful. To say THANK YOU and in recognition of National Volunteers week which occurs in June, we held a BBQ lunch last Thursday 20th June cooked by our chef Amanda and shared with the residents and colleagues of course.

The volunteers were served their lunch and drinks as well as being gifted a small pin Forget-me-not flower (symbol adopted by the Alzheimers society to promote positive Dementia care) and the residents signed everyone a card as additional gestures of our appreciation. You may be able to spot the forget-me-not pins on display and being worn!

If you find yourself on the South Coast and would like to pop in and see us, we can’t promise a BBQ, but we can promise a friendly welcome and maybe even a nice cup of coffee and some cake!!

A massive thanks to all who helped create & support our summer garden party on Saturday at Olivet :) While the weather didn't quite cooperate - that didn't stop the team bringing the garden & decorations inside and fitting almost 85 people into the lounge! Many scones, cakes & cups of fruit punch were consumed, and live music from the Reid brothers was enjoyed by a captive audience!

We all recently enjoyed an afternoon strawberry tea on Newton Court’s patio. What’s not to love about the perennial favourite of a scrumptious golden scone, with clotted cream, jam, strawberries (and of course a cup of tea)?

Residents relished the chance to sit outside together and be waited upon. The strawberry bunting fluttered prettily and the colourful tablecloth bedecked with all the scrumptious goodies was a lovely sight.

The strawberry tea was planned as a lovely afternoon event to be enjoyed by residents but also in the first instance as a thank you event for all our wonderful volunteers. There was also the chance to sample a thank you gift from the residents as they had been having fun prior to the event making chocolate and strawberry lollipops.

Newton Court gardens are in full bloom at the moment and the flowers and leafy green trees are delightful to be around. These events really lift the mood for all involved and it is a joy to be surrounded once more by the beauty of God’s creation.

Our Volunteer’s deserve special recognition! So we will be holding a BBQ on Thursday 20th June to show our gratitude and to say a big thank you to all our wonderful volunteers for all that they do😊. The Residents have been busy handmaking cards to give out next week. This week we have made the best out of the little sun we are getting, we have gone to the beach and sat outside in the garden soaking up as much sun as possible. Stay tuned for next weeks post to see all the fun we will get up to at the BBQ😊.

Yesterday, we celebrated our annual African Day at Eden House! This event is held to appreciate the diverse cultures of our staff, many of whom come from various African countries, ranging from Nigeria to Uganda. We enjoyed learning about their families and cultures. They sang and danced for us, and even our residents joined in the dancing! This cultural exchange fosters a sense of family here at Eden House.

For lunch, our dedicated kitchen staff prepared traditional African dishes. Some staff members also contributed by cooking food for everyone to sample. The food was delicious!
We learned a great deal and would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the staff who made the day so special, creating such a fun experience for our residents.

Our Current Situation

The government has indicated that we are now past the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the rate of transmission remaining consistently below the threshold of one and other positive indicators, such as falling new rates of infection and hospital admittance. As such, the current guidance to the general population has been amended from “stay at home” to “stay alert”.

However, the guidance for the care sector remains the same and pending the outcome of any review from public advisory bodies, our homes must remain closed to all but essential visitors. The residents of our homes are extremely vulnerable and we have to continue to mitigate the risk of them catching COVID-19. We are ever mindful of the potential impact on the mental and spiritual well-being of our residents and families as a result, but first and foremost we must continue to look after the physical well-being of every resident at this time.

During the period of closure, we have been greatly uplifted by the messages of support for our residents through letters, cards and video calls, and we urge you to continue to support our residents in this way - they need you more than ever before! Having moved past the peak of the virus, we now use this page to share updates, information and positive experiences from those in our homes.

We are very appreciative of the tireless work of our staff in supporting our residents and creating lively, stimulating environments within our homes at this time, despite the lack of visitors coming through our doors. We will keep visitor restrictions under constant review and will ease them as soon as we are able to in line with changes in government and professional guidance. In the meantime, thank you for your support and understanding.
