Whoop whoop, Smudge turns one today. Time flies as it doesn’t seem that long since she joined our canine clan. True to terrier form, you take the rough with the smooth (and some), but we love her to bits.

With an exceptional turn of pace, we’re looking forward to seeing this pocket rocket racing at our local Strathardle Games in a few weeks. What could possibly go wrong?

The Great Wall of China took over 2000 years to build, Stonehenge is thought to have taken over 1500, so what’s, ahem, a few years, between friends, for our Fishing Hut.

And how’s about our new wood-fired hut tub? What a looker, eh, and what a location, right by the babbling burn and totally at one with nature.

We’re finishing off the interiors and there’s some tidying up outside (check the new decking and paving) but definitely on the home run. Phew.

More off-grid updates to follow 🫧

Driving over the Moulin Moor last night, after a rare evening excursion to Pitlochry, we were treated to this breathtaking fiery furnace. Loving the reflection on the car roof 🔥

Best of all it has heralded some much overdue sunshine for this super Sunday.

Fittingly for July 4, we hosted a lovely team from Michigan for lunch today.

Given the extended family numbered a dozen, it was a pleasure using the Pavilion rather than the lunch hut. It’s such a light and bright space with stunning views over the loch and down the glen. Lunch followed by a tour of the walled garden and meeting the menagerie proved a big success.

Interesting fact we discovered: there’s a minimum age requirement for US presidency which, ahem, rather begs the question, why no maximum….? 🇺🇸

It was a delight to welcome back the team with a group of US media for a Wild Picnic up at the lunch hut.

Much laughter and merriment plus we even sampled a wee dram of this incredibly special whisky, a Lagavulin 29 year old. Only 250 bottles produced and the funky packaging celebrates the brilliant displays of aurora borealis in the night sky of Islay. Darn tasty it was too.

The walled garden looking exceptionally welcoming and verdant on this sunny Monday. Mind you, that does appear to be our vitamin allocation the week.

Pimping the pagoda is our next project. Thinking a lick of paint (any thoughts on colours?) and a roof upgrade.

Amongst other things, it’s the perfect spot for walking down the aisle, alfresco style.

Nothing like a spell of decent weather to prompt a cast or three on the loch. Fink is chief trout scout and the perfect boating companion.

The loch isn’t stocked but has a population of feisty brownies that head up the wee burns during spawning season. There’s some monsters lurking in there too.

It wouldn’t be spring without the obligatory bluebell carpet pic. Can’t recommend the Fungarth path walk enough, looping above Dunkeld with stunning views over Loch of Lowes.

So precious are these gems, that it’s actually illegal to intentionally pick, uproot or destroy bluebells. Who knew? 💙

We’re not one for unduly stripping terriers but Smudge really did resemble a mobile fur ball. Jean from Auchtermurchty worked her magic for the best part of two hours and we’re thrilled with the results.

Here she is sporting her spring coat and here endeth the abbreviated shaggy dog story.

Drum roll for our latest venture, The Schoolhouse

In 2011, when the pupil roll at Straloch School was just two, the school was mothballed and subsequently closed.

Over the intervening years it’s been totally neglected and fallen into considerable disrepair.

When the property came up for commercial auction last summer, we were fortunate enough to purchase it and, just today, we’ve been granted permission by Perth and Kinross Council to convert it into a five-bed holiday home.

It’s an ambitious project requiring a chunky investment but we’re wholly committed to bringing this 1849 C-listed building back to its former glory. In so doing, we’ll be conserving the historical and architectural value, preventing further deterioration of the structure and fabric, whilst providing additional tourist accommodation and employment.

It’s especially poignant as Lucy and her siblings attended the school and have extremely fond memories of their time there.

All being well, The Schoolhouse will open for business by summer 2025. Wish us luck.

Rounding off the Easter bank holiday with an update on our ever so cute lambs.

Peggy, Paddy and Polly have just moved up from Penny’s - anyone would think there’s a theme here - to the walled garden where they’re loving the freedom to graze and gambol to their heart’s content.

Just a fortnight old, these Valais Blacknose cross lambs really are little winners and the latest four-legged attraction for visiting families.

The River Brerachan looking rather fetching in the Easter evening sun. When it meets the Alt Fearnach, on Straloch, the water becomes the River Ardle which flows for ten miles or so before it joins the Ericht, in turn a tributary of the mighty River Tay.

The Brerechan Meadows are a Site of Special Interest (SSI) rich in plant species and bird life. However, the jury’s out about the burgeoning beaver population as they continue gnawing their way through any and every riverside tree they encounter. Ho hum.

We’re grinning from ear to ear as this week’s Wild Picnic, our first of the year, was memorably special.

After an hour’s yomp up the hill road, Ryan surprised with a marriage proposal. That’s right, with fizz chilling, a gourmet lunch laid out, and a ring at the ready, he only went and popped the question.

We’ve long thought our lunch hut is a romantic bolthole, and it’s hosted an elopement or two, but that’s our first engagement on site. Wishing this lovely young couple from Dundee all the very best for many years to come (whilst secretly hoping they’ll come back here for the actual wedding ceremony) 💕

That’s music to our ears, given the stunning scenery here in Perthshire. This pic looks west towards Ben Vrackie and Pitlochry on a recent sunny afternoon.

In terms of international spend and visits, the USA is leading the charge (by a country mile). Thank you to all our friends across the pond, our country needs you, and we look forward to welcoming you back 🇺🇸

Our Witch’s Stone looking resplendent against snow capped peaks.

An idiosyncratic Straloch feature, this glacial erratic comes complete with embedded Scots Pine and a heap of old wives’ tales, and is an easy stroll from the holiday cottages.

I learnt a new word yesterday.

Apricity….meaning ‘the warmth of the sun in winter’.

If you live in a chilly part of the world, you come to understand the apricity of a day that provides a warming glow of brilliant sunshine despite being surrounded by ice and sunshine. Marvellous.

And here’s a pic of our local highway to go with it.

Smudge would like to say a few words:

“Wishing all our friends and followers, two legs or four legs, a magnificently Merry Christmas. I’m turning in early as apparently there’s a funny fellow shimmying down the chimney later. My strange human owners have left out a glass of whisky and a side-order of mince pies. All being well, i’ll have the last laugh 🐾”
