Portaferry's fabulous art and heritage centre, The Portico of Ards, hosts an eclectic range of events, from organ recitals to stand up comedy, and is housed in a Grade A listed building from 1841.
The classically inspired building was constructed for Portaferry Presbyterian Church. The minister, Rev John Orr, ran a Classics school in the town and this might have influenced its unique design, modelled on the Greek Temple of Nemesis.
The Presbyterian congregation still hold their church service in Portico every Sunday.

Did you know that the Ards Peninsula was once known as "Little Holland" because of all the windmills dotted across the landscape? With few rivers on the peninsula to turn watermills, farmers and landowners took advantage of the seawinds and built windmills. Many survive as windmill "stumps" such as these at Knockinelder and Windmill Hill near Portaferry.
Ballycopeland Windmill, near Millisle, is one of the few remaining windmills in Ireland with its working mechanism still in place. You can visit Ballycopeland Windmill Thursday to Mondays for free!

With food rationing during and after World War Two, folk must really have looked forward to the start of the locally grown Comber Earlies potatoes - a real treat to be enjoyed with farmhouse butter (and perhaps a drink of buttermilk) - to relieve the monotony of the wartime diet.
On Thursday 6 June, Comber Farmers' Market commemorates D Day with a themed market and, of course, Comber Earlies will be on sale. No ration book required.

Next time you call to Daft Eddy's, Whiterock, for lunch you can walk off some of the calories on the trail which takes you over the back of Sketrick Island with gorgeous views across Strangford Lough. You know summer is here when the NGS Northern Ireland Open Gardens start!
This weekend, Old Balloo House and Barn at Killinchy will be open 2 - 5pm on both Saturday and Sunday. Admission is £5. These informal gardens have a great variety of shrubs, and perennials but the focus for 2024 is on late rhododendrons and early roses. (Please note: As the site is on a very steep incline it is not accessible to everyone and is not suitable for children). Pick up the Open Gardens 2024 Guide in Ards Visitor Information Centre, 31 Regent Street, Newtownards, so you don't miss out on other openings throughout the summer months.

Did you know that Grey Abbey on the beautiful Ards Peninsula was at one time one of the richest abbeys in the Earldom of Ulster? The Papal Taxation of 1306 indicates that it was a very prosperous foundation. Although the Cistercian order usually left their buildings quite simple and unadorned, the main West door has some beautiful "dogtooth" decoration. Take a closer look when you visit and wonder at this stone carving which has survived for 800 years!

Did you know that many of the ponds at WWT Castle Espie Wetland Centre outside Comber are flooded quarries? Castle Espie limestone was quarried on the site and valued for its reddish pink colour. It was used locally and a good example can be seen in the nearby old Tullynakill church where it was used in the window and door surrounds. The door at Tullynakill is dated 1639.
