Puglia – the heel of Italy’s boot – is famed for its trulli, conical-shaped houses that dot the landscape. Lesser-known but no less charming are its masseria, 16th-century fortified farmhouses constructed of chunky local limestone. Renowned for their spaciousness, many of these masseria have been converted into luxurious villas or boutique hotels. One of our favourites is Masseria La Maison, a slow-pace, 5-bedroom villa set amid a vast, ancient olive grove and orchards of fruit trees.
