(1)

WhiteTor Farm is a small, family run hill farm on the western fringes of Dartmoor. Set in an isolated and ruggedly beautiful location, the farm offers dog friendly holiday accommodation in two sympathetically converted, traditional granite barns with stunning views across the moors. WhiteTor Farm is also home to the Dartmoor herd of pedigree New Zealand Kunekune pigs and the Torlander herd of Australian Lowline cattle.

I’m not sure there’s anything more relaxing than watching chickens in the garden in the sunshine!

11/02/2018

Outside it might be chilly, but in Nestling the heating is up, the lamps are lit and there’s freshly baked, lemon shortbread and daffodils for today’s guests...😊💐

Another day, another frosty walk! ❄️

06/02/2018

Thought I might make this stump into a bird table...maybe not 🐱

A beautifully, frosty morning for a stomp!

Hmm...it hasn’t taken Betty long to decide that the new haybars make a better nest box than the one she has. Oh well, better camp out and wait for her egg 🥚

It may be the middle of January, but our ‘rainbow’ chooks think they can smell the spring...🐣

...and five minutes later: fiery skies over Bodmin moor in the distance! 🧡

It’s a beautiful December evening on 💙

15/12/2017

Tabby and Amber are getting excited because this weekend, our guests are coming especially to get to know them and our other Kunekune pigs!
Our guests are welcome to spend as much time as they like with our animals and to get involved with whatever we happen to be busy with on the farm.

11/12/2017

Just a little dusting on Dartmoor!

08/12/2017

Brr! It’s cold outside...but Meader has a warm welcome for today’s guests.

☃️In our ‘welcome’ baskets for December:☃️

🎄’Rainbow’ eggs from our free range flock

🎄 Home-baked, organic bread

🎄 Home-made sloe gin from wild, foraged sloes

🎄Gold top milk from a local, ethical and sustainable dairy

More of everything in the baskets, as well as our own high welfare meat, can be purchased from the farmhouse 😊

This was my kitchen table this afternoon! I was busy making our Christmas wreaths from materials cut and foraged from the farm. Spruce branches from our aptly named, but inhospitable and boggy Christmas Tree field. Willow from a tree in the garden and various other bits and pieces. My favourite are the mini cone branches which sport lots of lovely lichen: a sign of healthy air apparently! 🎄

What a beautiful December 1st we’ve had!

Ooh big thanks to Fergus at Roots and Vines in Tavistock for some lovely veggies that are no longer fresh enough for people to eat. Our Kunekunes are fed mainly fruit and veg that would otherwise be binned or composted and home cut hay plus fresh grass in the spring and summer. We think that their ability to fatten and thrive on this diet, rather than cereal-heavy concentrates, makes them more sustainable (and probably healthier) to eat. Here is one of our lovely breeding sows, Amber tucking into a squash! NB: Don’t worry she’s not in a cage, she just found that, in order to stop the squash rolling around like a football when she tried to eat it, she needed to wedge it up against the fence! 😉

27/11/2017

Making a start on the Christmas wreaths this morning!🎄

25/11/2017

Brrr! A chilly morning here! Tabitha and Amber have obviously spent the frosty night snuggled right down in their straw beds and one of the hens appears to have decided that she preferred Pirate’s quarters last night: mind you, I don’t think Mr Fox would venture into his pen, even for a chicken dinner!

23/11/2017

Did somebody say ‘breakfast’?

22/11/2017

Thanks for a lovely review Carole!

Other reviews (including those about our home bred, high welfare meat!) can be found on our pages at Sykes Cottages.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
..on our arrival, flowers, fudge and a fruit basket awaited us,the log fire burning brightly. This was very well received as the journey had been fairly difficult with the amount of traffic and heavy rain all the way.

Mr and Mrs Thomas were friendly, and helpful, allowing us to take our two dogs into a field with less mud after the heavy rain.
The property is very nice, beds very comfortable. Good book selection, and paperwork on local amenities.

Yes we would consider a summer visit, to be in superb countryside and wonderful views, where our grandsons could help feed the resident pigs, horses and chickens.

We also came home with home produced pork and beef which was on sale from the owners.

Yes a very good property, with kindly owners where nothing seemed to be too much trouble.

Our Dartmoor Hill Pony Spud is looking 'well'! 😱😂 These ponies are so hardy they can live on fresh air, as they say!

27/10/2017

! And the sun is back! Here’s a look at the view from the very top of our farm.

26/10/2017

Hrumph...the mizzle is back. But it’s ok because...brownies 😋

25/10/2017

Phew! After quite a few days of Dartmoor’s finest ‘mizzle’, a cuppa on the decking and a shot of vitamin D is lovely!

20/10/2017

Ooof! Put those diets on hold...today’s treats for our guests: Millionaire’s Shortbread

17/10/2017

Good evening....from Dartmoor 🌙

Our bull, Gerry (Langford Geronimo) being a big poser this morning! 🤣
He’s just come home after serving our neighbour’s Dexter herd and is available to hire. He can work Pedigree herds or adds lovely value as a terminal sire on small beef cattle.

28/09/2017

...to Leo enjoying the hay fields just before they were cut!

The autumn mizzle didn't dampen spirits at the Great British Country Apple Weekend at Cotehele today! The beautiful Tudor estate is a twenty minute drive from the farm and host events all year round. It was incredible to see (and sample!) the diversity of apple grown in the orchard there. Some are ancient and primitive varieties in danger of being lost. And they were completely delicious!
It was wonderful to chat with the orchard volunteers who are so passionate about preserving the apples and growing them sensitively and sustainably with zero pesticides.
Farming for the future by looking to the past; just how we like it!

23/09/2017

Breakfast time for Lulu and Nell!

20/09/2017

Open wide!
Giving our lovely boar, Pirate a little health check today...teeth and feet! 🤣😱🤣

18/09/2017

An autumn baby!
Little Nelly was born this afternoon to our pure Australian Lowline heifer (Langford) Lulu. She's the first calf to be born here by Brisbane-based, champion bull Vitulus Full Force, so we're excited to welcome her!

18/09/2017

Good morning from !

16/09/2017

Spot the baby buzzards!
Our resident youngsters have been out and about today. They let me get surprisingly close with my camera! But then again, up here, we humans are very much in their territory, not the the other way around...

05/09/2017

Preparing this year's Sloe Gin for our December 'welcome' baskets! 🙃

02/09/2017

The sun is still warm but the air is freshening and it's time to start picking blackberries and sloes! It's a particularly good year for sloes and just an hour's picking this morning yielded 2 kilos! We enjoyed the beautiful scent of the honeysuckle while we picked...
