Looking over to the infamous Foxtor Mires from Fox Tor itself. Believed to be the inspiration for Grimpen Mire in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s ‘The Hound of The Baskervilles’, it’s a wild featureless part of the moor. However, it’s far less intimidating in glorious Spring weather like this, taken in April last year.

Today felt very spring like in the warm sunshine.
Do you prefer warm sunny walks in Spring, or the cold, crisp days of winter?
Either way, is glorious at any time of the year. This photo has wonderful memories of a stunning winter walk over the highest parts of the moor.

Brentor Church is one of the most recognisable locations in West Devon. The rock itself is Brent Tor, the village is Brentor but the true, lesser known name of the building itself is The Church of St Michael de Rupe (St Michael of the Rock) and dates from around the 13th/14th Century. It’s believed to be the highest working church in England.
Around the Tor are Iron Age earthworks, the remains of an ancient hill fort. The summit provides breathtaking views of the moors to the east and Cornwall to the west.
A ‘must see’ for all our guests, as it’s less than a mile and a half from the lodge.

Big skies over the wildest parts of . Glorious walking this weekend, with cold winds but startling visibility.
Bonus points if you can name the Tor.

With the easing of Covid restrictions from 12 April, we're delighted to be welcoming guests back to the lodge on Monday. There's still some availability in April and May - so do get in touch if you're yearning for a stay in the Westcountry.

Spring was definitely in the air today here in Devon, with blue skies and warm sunshine. Difficult to believe the moors looked like this just over a month ago.
