Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club Around the Island Race
Hong Kong’s Biggest Annual Celebration of Sail and Paddle

Sunday 16 November

This year’s Around the Island Race marks 150 years since the first race to circumnavigate Hong Kong Island was recorded, featuring a mere six boats racing around Hong Kong Island to starboard. Sailors have since regarded this route as a tricky challenge with unpredictable wind shifts and strong tides.

Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club introduced the race as an annual event in 1983 with 258 boats the largest recorded entry for the modern-day 26nm circumnavigation. The logistics for the largest event on the Hong Kong sailing calendar include a team of around 50 volunteers to man onshore and on-the-water safety.

On Race Day there will be two start lines immediately in front of the Kellett Island Clubhouse in Causeway Bay featuring up to 20 separate starts for sailboats, whilst over 30 local and international crews on outrigger canoes and coastal rowing boats will start and finish in the calmer surroundings of the RHKYC Middle Island sailing and rowing centre.

The race course features a 26nm circumnavigation of Hong Kong Island to starboard, which has been sanctioned by Hong Kong Marine Department since 2003. If the breeze is sufficient, boats will finish back where they started, at RHKYC’s Kellett Island clubhouse, however if winds are light, the Race Officer may decide to finish the fleet at Green Island, Cyberport or Stanley.

Entries are likely to range from one-person dinghies to 50-foot-plus cruising yachts. The outright winner of the race will be the boat finishing in the shortest time once ATI handicaps are applied and which will lift the La Cigale Trophy at the official prizegiving on Monday 17 November.

Apart from the raft of trophies and prizes presented by the Club for the Around the Island Race, a separate trophy known as the Cariad Trophy is awarded by the Hong Kong Sailing Federation to any boat which independently breaks the record for the fastest circumnavigation.

Last year, with the wind gods clear and present, Extreme 40 Aberdeen Asset Management finally smashed the record set by the late Dennis Wong in 1990, lifting the Cariad Trophy with a new, fastest ever elapsed time of 2h 13m 11s. Not to be outdone, a further 13 new elapsed time records were set in the 2013 race by the one-design and monohull fleets.

The Online Entry Form, Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions for the sailboat event can be found at the event website http://www.rhkyc.org.hk/AroundtheIslandRace.aspx. The official entry deadline is 1800hrs on Monday 10 November, with late entries accepted up until 1800hrs on Thursday 13 November.

Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club
10 to 11 May

This very wet weekend, Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club (RHKYC) formally closes another successful racing season with the Le French May / Societe Generale Spring Regatta.

Open to entrants from all of Hong Kong's sailing clubs, the Club expects the iconic ’Fragrant Harbour’ to be filled with over 400 sailors and 100 keelboats in 10 different classes of racing. The Regatta will feature three races over two days, with the winners announced immediately after racing at the Sunday evening prizegiving.

The start line and courses will be set each day by Race Officer, Claire Morgan, with her selection being influenced by wind and tidal conditions. On Saturday the Big Boat class starts the action at 1350hrs, while Race 2 starts at 1110hrs on Sunday, with Race 3 to follow as soon as possible.

The Club is also delighted to announce that world-acclaimed couture fragrance house Robert Piguet, renowned for its fragrance Fracas, is to be the scent of this weekend’s Le French May / Societe Generale.

As a major part of the landscape of Hong Kong and France, the sea is a centre of cultural and sporting activities that illustrate team spirit. Robert Piguet is extremely proud to partner with Le French May and the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club in this celebration of sailing and the sea.

"Parfums Robert Piguet is extremely honored to be part of Le French May celebration in the most dynamic city in the world," says Bayly Ledes, President of Parfums Robert Piguet. "Our participation with the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club is particularly special as we introduce our new scent of Bois Bleu alongside the stunning backdrop of Hong Kong Harbour and the excitement of the Regatta."

Chief Executive Officer - Le French May Arts Festival, Julien-Loic Garin said: “It is with great pleasure that Le French May is partnering this year again with Robert Piguet. As a valuable Friend of Le French May, Robert Piguet is part of the promotion and celebration of French elegance and culture throughout the world, and particularly in Hong Kong.”

Torrey Dorsey, Corporate & International Partnerships Manager at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club spoke of the collaboration, “Robert Piguet is a refreshing addition to Le French May / Societe Generale Spring Regatta 2014 and is the ideal brand to join us for this celebration of the sea. The opulence and sophistication of this renowned French fragrance house compliments our partnership with Le French May and Societe Generale, and is sure to leave a lasting impression!”

Ooh La La! A Celebration of Sailing
Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club and Le French May

Le French May / Societe Generale Spring Regatta
Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 May

The Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club’s 2014 edition of its annual Spring Regatta will this year be a feature of the widely-recognised Le French May programme in Hong Kong.

Organised by the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macau, Le French May aims to present a whole range of events celebrating the best of France and its culture which includes the importance of the sea.

Le French May 2014 will also celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the People’s Republic of China and France and will explore the similarities between the two cultures.

Le French May / Societe Generale Spring Regatta will feature over 100 boats in 10 different categories of racing in Victoria Harbour on the weekend of 10 and 11 May.

Joint Title Sponsor, Societe Generale, will also host an exclusive dinner event at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club on Friday 9 May as a prelude to the “celebration of sailing” that weekend.

Mark Bovaird, General Manager at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club stated, “The Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club is happy to join Le French May and its celebration of the sea and cultural relations with China. We share the same mission – to actively collaborate with stakeholders in China, which in our case is to drive the growth of sailing and rowing - and we are honoured that the Consulate General of France has recognised our contribution to the growth of these sports here in Asia.”
