August is the month when everyone comes back to work to prepare for a busy fall 🍂🍁

At FourPhase, we knew in June that Q3 would be extremely busy as all our business development managers apparently had agreed to support all our clients at the same time! 😅 But we really look forward to see things hopping in our workshop after summer, and prepare for installations in the Americas, in Azerbaijan and on both UK and Norwegian continental shelfs in the North Sea. We know that FourPhase's collaborative, problem solving approach will prevail to give our customers what they ordered and more!

Our clients are increasingly understanding the value of continuous sand management in production wells.

The benefits are clear to see: Increased production, reduced risk for choked-in wells and savings on maintenance due to reduced solids erosion. At the half year mark for 2024, FourPhase has removed approximately 29 tons of sand and other solids, clocked 492 operational days and seen considerable growth in our markets. The largest growth is in the Caribbean. Read more in one of our case studies from the region to learn about the benefits of sand management in a dry gas well.

Taking the opposite approach ⏳

Operators often misinterpret sand production as a sign of declining well performance, mistaking sand accumulation a sign of impending failure. But sand accumulation can be temporary if handled right. Using the wellflow to actively transport sand out of the formation and manage sand separation topside ensures continuous well productivity.

Meet our new project manager, Magnus Hanevik!

Coming from a background in offshore drilling, Magnus joined FourPhase in January 2023 as an Offshore Supervisor. Now he's moving onshore our new Project Manager. Magnus' day-to-day responsibilities will be to plan and deliver operations, support ongoing operations, and take care of all the project-related administration work.

Says Magnus: "I'm looking forward to working with the onshore team and taking on new challenges and opportunities. Working at FourPhase for the past 18 months, I really appreciate the company's commitment to innovation, the customer-oriented approach and the supportive work environment."

Producing sand is good for your well! ⏳

That may seem as a bold statement, but we find that the benefits of producing sand from oil and gas wells are not well understood and appreciated. Producing and managing sand in a controlled manner has a number of benefits that can help production. Recently, FourPhase, completed a jetting operation of a production separator on the Aker BP-operated Alvheim production vessel (FPSO).

The project marks the first time Aker BP has utilised a temporary jetting unit to remove solids on Alvheim. For this, FourPhase deployed its state-of-the-art stand-alone SingleFlow jetting unit to remove solids from the separator. In less than a week Aker BP was able to empty the production separator.

How small is a micron? 🔬

FourPhase removes sand from oil and gas streams in the range from 20 microns to 10 000 microns. Some size comparisons:

* Anything below 50 microns is too small for the human eye to see without a microscope. One micron is one-millionth of a meter, or one-tenthousandth of a centimeter. A white blood cell is 30 microns across.
* 70 microns is the thickness of a human hair. You can see particles of this width with normal vision.
* 120 microns is a grain of salt, easiliy visible for the human eye.
* And 10.000 microns is - maybe you did the maths already? - a particle one centimeter in diameter. Your typical small piece of gravel, or approximately the size of a sugar cube.

Removing each and every particle from the oil and gas stream is what we do at FourPhase.

An unfortunate meeting between one of our desanders and a low bridge was one such moment. When the unfortunate message about the destroyed system was relayed to our headquarters in Bergen, many of us thought: Now what? Read how this crisis brought out the best in our company and improved our game!

Meeting the well intervention professionals at ICoTA 🌟

FourPhase supports Coiled Tubing cleanout operations with sand management handling globally. At the 14th ICoTA Scandinavian Well Intervention Conference in Stavanger, concluding today, we have the opportunity to connect with the Coiled Tubing specialists to discuss how sand management can be integrated with CT. Olof Nilsson or Even Solsvik are available on stand to provide sand management insights for any CT operation, or vizualize options through the FourPhase 3D simulator tool.

Our UK office recently gathered a team with unknown handicaps for the current Icota (Intervention and Coiled Tubing Association) golf tournament in Aberdeen to have a blast networking and hopefully completing some holes. The whole business development team in one place!

It's not often we get to gather the entire business development team at FourPhase headquarters in Bergen, but we always try to do so some time in May/June. The past week was spent strategizing (fun), budgeting (not so fun), digging into technology with our engineers (fun, again) and generally catching up before ending with the annual summer party (definitely FUN).

Speaking to an audience and presenting a subject can be a challenge! 🗣

At FourPhase, we want all our colleagues to be at ease and at their best when presenting. To put us in the best position to do so, we decided to call on public speaker-guru Kyle Murtagh (pictured at left). As the 4 x UK & Ireland Public Speaking Champion (and many other awards), Kyle visited us this week to share a wealth of his tips and tricks for public speaking and presenting.

We learned a lot! Even though we probably won't be able to compete with Kyle just yet, we will certainly use our new presentation and speaking skills to improve our game!

Size matters - and smaller is better 😉

For the jungle of different installations out there, size is important. And when it comes to decision time, compact, powerful and efficient is almost always better than bigger. FourPhase equipment is designed with a modular approach, and sized to fit through the standard well hatch with a footprint of 2 x 2 metres (6.6 x 6.6ft).

Our equipment is often chosen for its compact size, ease of installation and lower weight to fit limited crane capacity. The video shows how FourPhase modules can be stacked like lego, maximising valuable deck space and easily slotting in among other equipment.

Did you ever wonder why we called our company FourPhase? 🫡

In oil and gas extraction, production separators on installations separate the three phases oil, gas and water for further treatment. Sand and other solids in the well flow are sedimented in the separator as the other three phases move downstream. 🧩

At FourPhase, we focus on sand as the fourth phase of oil and gas production, hence our company name. There is no doubt that sand is a production integrity challenge, affecting about half of the wells in sandstone reservoirs globally, according to operators. Our answer to that challenge is providing state of the art cyclones to remove the fourth phase, eliminating downstream sand from separators and other equipment adversely affected by sand in the produced phases. All without impeding production rates.

FourPhase on standby in Baku 🔧

In Baku, Azerbaijan, we have one of our longest running operations. From 2016 we have provided desanding support for fields in the Caspian ocean. We have permanently deployed DualFlow desanders and can support CT and Concentric CT cleanout operations, with additional options also available. FourPhase personnel is available to operators at short notice.

Our long-lived presence in the country is due to consistently high customer satisfaction and quality deliveries. Over 2.275 operating hours, we have removed 15 tons of sand and recorded an uptime of 99.9 %. The mission continues, as we aim to expand our footprint and number of wells serviced to ensure solids-free flow.

The 17th of May is Constitution Day in Norway, in celebration of the signing of the Norwegian Constitution in Eidsvoll, May 17th 1814. It is a public holiday and a day of great celebration in Norway, with children's parades and festivities. Our facilities in Bergen are closed.

Optimizing a dry gas well using active topside sand control ⚙️

A small brownfield asset (+30 years old) in the Carribean was shut-in due to sand production and sand slugs disrupting production. The client needed topside sand control with a small footprint and rental solution for operational and economic flexibility.

A compact DualFlow desander was mobilized, and the well currently produces around 13 MSCF/day, adding considerable additional daily revenue to the field. Read more on how we approached and solved the challenge in our case study.

Our Marketing Manager, Olof Nilsson, is fresh out of an exciting two days of meeting and discussing with new and familiar people in our industry at the annual gathering of the GCE Ocean Tehcnology cluster outside Bergen, Norway.

The GCE Ocean network is a great arena for collaboration. The involved members, customers, and suppliers, strive for sharing and collaborating across industry verticals to find useful solutions. This year’s overarching themes were the energy transition, controlling cost increases for renewables implementation, and balancing the transition with supply chain security.
