"What are the key industry's challenges regarding ship recycling up to 2030?"
That is one of the questions our Managing Director Pia Meling got from Safety4Sea in this interview: https://safety4sea.com/cm-grieg-green-its-time-to-shed-our-focus-on-workers-rights-at-ship-recycling-facilities/
She highlights the lack of regulations, pointing out that "most of the world's tonnage is recycled in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. It is doubtful there will be sufficient recycling capacity at the EU-listed facilities when many vessels, rigs and platforms reach their end of life over the next years."
She also states, "Doing ship recycling in a sustainable way has a cost. There is, however, little willingness to pay for a higher ship recycling standard amongst most shipowners today, and the regulations are easily evaded."
So, what do we do? "Now it's time to think about our entire shipping footprint – not only ship operation but also shipbuilding, repair, and recycling. Also, the 'S' in ESG must be brought more into the light. The social effects of our industry are often hidden. During Covid, we thankfully opened our eyes towards seafarer well-being and rights. There was a global movement to recognise seafarers as key workers and give them priority access to Covid-19 vaccines. The workers at the ship recycling facilities also deserve our attention. Their working conditions are often much worse than for those onboard the ship," Pia says.

Grieg Green @ ONS
For over a decade, we have helped ship and rig owners ensure their vessels get a dignified and sustainable end. Next week we'll be at ONS in Stavanger, and we are eager to discuss sustainability, recycling, hazardous material, regulations, and a circular economy. Meet us in Hall5, booth 5032 or come up and say hi if you see us!
Pia Meling - our New MD
We are thrilled to welcome Pia Meling, one of Norway's most experienced, innovative and commercially savvy shipping leaders, as our new Managing Director.
"Pia's experience, competence, and ability to connect with people will be a tremendous asset for Grieg Green and the whole Grieg Maritime Group," says Matt Duke, CEO of Grieg Maritime Group and Chair of the Board of Grieg Green.
Pia Meling joins Grieg Green from her position as VP Sales and Marketing at Massterly. She has a long management career in shipping, working for heavyweights like Wilhelmsen and Torvald Klaveness. She is a director of several boards and was the President of WISTA Norway for two years from 2019. Pia is a much sought-after speaker who advocates sustainability, innovation and diversity.
"ESG is high on the ocean industries' agenda, but the main focus has been on decarbonisation. Green, safe recycling and optimal lifecycle management of ocean assets & equipment are areas where we as an industry need to improve drastically. In a world of resource scarcity, I am excited and grateful for this opportunity to work with the highly competent team in Grieg Green and with our customers to create new business models for a circular economy," says Pia Meling.
