Bhaktapur (Bhadgaon)
Perché à 1 410 mètres sur une colline, Bhaktapur, ou Bhadgaon, « la ville des dévots », entraîne le visiteur dans un voyage à travers le temps. S’étendant sur un peu plus de 10 km², cette cité a conservé le charme de ses rues pavées, de ses maisons de briques rouges et d’un mode de vie directement hérité de l’époque médiévale. L’extraordinaire Durbar Square à la porte d’or hautement célébrée et à l’extraordinaire palais aux cinquante-cinq fenêtres, reflète la gloire de la dynastie Malla, époque où l’art et l’architecture s’épanouissaient dans les trois villes de la vallée. A 14 km à l’est de Katmandou, cette ancienne cité doit également sa célébrité à la poterie et à la sculpture sur bois, respectivement exposées sur ses places et ses fenêtres.

Bhaktapur et ses environs

Siddha Pokhari : cette petite ville compte le plus grand nombre de fontaines publiques. Siddha Pokhu (Pokhari), est l’un de ces grands bassins approvisionnant en eau les habitants de la cité. Construit au 15e siècle par le roi Yakshya Malla, ce large bassin rectangulaire fourmillent de poissons et ouvre occasionnellement ses eaux au public pour y pêcher ou y naviguer.

Le temple de Nyatapola : emblème de Bhaktapur, ce temple unique ayant résisté au tremblement de terre dévastateur de 1934, se dresse fièrement au-dessus de la ville - Nyatapola signifie littéralement cinq étages -. L’escalier menant au sanctuaire dédié à une déesse tantrique est flanqué de statues de pierre. Les lutteurs légendaires des marches inférieures possèdent la force de dix hommes, soit dix fois moins que la force des statues du niveau supérieur, et ainsi de suite jusqu’au sommet des marches.

Le temple de Batsala : le temple en pierre de Batsala Devi comprend une multitude de sculptures finement ciselées. Juste derrière cet édifice se trouve la fameuse cloche de bronze localement appelée la cloche des chiens aboyant car chacun de ses tintements s’accompagnent des aboiements des chiens du voisinage. C’était pour annoncer le début et la fin des couvres feu quotidiens que le roi Ranjit Malla m***a cette cloche en 1737. De nos jours, elle sonne chaque matin les offrandes des prêtres à la déesse Taleju.

Le temple de Bhairavnath : dédié à Kasi Bhairav, incarnation courroucé de Shiva, le sanctuaire de ce temple à trois niveaux ne comprend que la tête de Bhairav. La légende veut que ce dernier eût la tête coupée par un expert tantrique qui cherchait à le faire rester à Bhaktapur. En pagode, ce temple se tient aux côtés du célèbre Nyatapola à cinq niveaux. Edifié sous le roi Jagat Jyoti Malla, le temple revêtit sa forme définitive sous le roi Bhupatindra Malla, amoureux zélé des arts.

Thimi : à 10 km à l’est de Katmandou, en direction de Bhaktapur, se situe ce village. En plus de l’agriculture, la plupart des habitant prend part à la poterie. En retrait de la capitale, Thimi fournit Katmandou non seulement en poteries mais également en légumes. La déesse Balkumari y est particulièrement vénérée. Le charme de Thimi réside dans un mode de vie médiéval qui enchante le visiteur.

Celebrate all the good things in life! Spring comes a calling. Fagu Purnima or Holi is a Hindu festival celebrated on a full-moon day at the end of the month of Falgun, from mid February to mid May.
Celebrated as the harbinger of good and balmy spring weather, Fagu Purnima is celebrated all over Nepal especially in the southern Terai region. Holi will be celebrated on March 1 in the hills, while in the Terai the festival will be celebrated a day later, on March 2. Legend has it that this festival originated as celebration of the death of the Demoness Holika.
