I am reaching out to you with a heartfelt plea for assistance. A dear friend of mine in Tsum recently faced a devastating incident as their newly built hotel succumbed to a fire on 13 January 2024.

The ancestors of Nar-Phu migrated from Tibet generations ago, shaping a life centered around agriculture, yak herding, and trade. In winter, traders embark on journeys southward, reaching the mid-hills, India, and sometimes Southeast Asia. Nar's men manage yak herds for wealthier neighbors across the challenging Kang La pass in upper Manang. Hardy farmers cultivate high-altitude barley, wheat, and buckwheat.

Traditionally, seasonal controls governed access to the Nar valley, with the perilous low trail along the Nar River open only in winter. Travelers braved this route, crossing 22 wooden bridges in a single day, often in dilapidated conditions. During the monsoons, some bridges were dismantled to prevent them from succumbing to floods. In contrast, the high route above Nar village, traversing Kang La, remained the sole passage. Today, sturdy steel bridges have replaced fragile wooden ones, rendering the river trail accessible year-round.

In 1950, Tilman embarked on an adventurous trek around Annapurna, traversing through Manang and over Kang La to reach the remote Nar-Phu valley. Remarkably, he was among the initial foreigners granted permission to explore the hills beyond the Kathmandu Valley during that time.
