The Buddha Purnima festival is well known in Nepal as "Buddha Jayanti", and is celebrated throughout the length & breadth of the country. However, Lumbini – the birthplace of Buddha, and Swyambhu – the holy temple for Buddhists, famously known as "the Monkey Temple", are key sites where the festival is observed with great pomp and reverence. The Swayambhunath temple opens its main door only on this day, and the Buddhist faithful queue up to make their peace with the Buddha from all over Kathmandu valley during this special event. Lumbini takes centre stage during this time with Thousands of pilgrims from around the globe who come together to celebrate Buddha's birthday at his birthplace, Lumbini. Buddha is also sacred to some Hindus, making way for the "Buddha Jayanti" to be declared a public holiday.

On this particular day, the Buddhist faithful distribute complimentary meals and clothes to the needy and also provide financial aid to monasteries, schools, orphanage and old age homes to magnify the Buddha’s teachings. Buddha Purnima is also a day when devout Buddhists and followers alike assemble at various stupas and monasteries before dawn for the ceremonial hoisting of the Buddhist flag amidst the chanting of hymns in praise of the holy triple gems: The Buddha, The Dharma (his teachings), and The Sangha (his disciples).

Devotees bring simple offerings of flowers, candles and joss-sticks to place at the feet of their teacher. These symbolic offerings remind followers that just as the beautiful flowers wither away after a short while and the candles and joss-sticks soon burn out, so too is life which must pass away at some point in time. At this time, Devotees are encouraged to make special efforts to refrain from killing of any kinds. The faithful are also advised to consume more veggies than meat.

Happy Dashain!!!!!
Dashain is one of the biggest and most awaited festivals in Nepal. Celebrated by the Hindu community, the festival celebrates the victory of good over evil and lasts for about a fortnight. During the festival nine goddesses or Nava Durgas are worshipped. Dashain is a time of family get-togethers as relatives and family members make it a point to visit each other during this time. Houses are cleaned and new clothes are bought. People visit the shrines of the Nava Durgas wearing new clothes and make offerings. During ‘Tika’ (celebrated on the tenth day or Dashami) the elders bless the younger generation by applying tika(made with vermilion and rice) on their forehead. Animal sacrifices and feasting mark the celebrations.

The Swayambhunath stupa is one of those gems that crowns the magnificence of Kathmandu’s ancient architecture. This is a perfectly proportioned monument with the piercing eyes that seem to be constantly reminding the inhabitants of the ancient valley to: ‘Hear no evil, See no evil, and Speak no evil’’. The 13-tiered, beehive like formation at the top represents the 13 stages that humans must pass through to achieve nirvana.

Today was the 2nd day of the Indra Jatra - the annual event where the living Goddess of Nepal is taken out on a chariot ride. Kumari - the living Goddess takes her journey to bless her devotees along with 2 other Gods - Bhairon and Ganesha. We got really lucky today when one of the volunteers helped us get to a vantage point where we could capture the Goddess as she set out on her journey. The result is here. -

Happy Teej Festival to all the Nepalese Women/ Ladies

Teej is a colourful three-day festival celebrated by Hindu married women. During this festival, married women worship the celestial couple, Shiva and Parvati and seek their blessings and pray for their husband’s well-being. This is done by observing a day long fast on the second day of the festival. On the first day they are invited to their maternal homes for a feast known as ‘Dar’. The women deck themselves up like brides, wearing red saris and red, green and yellow coloured ornaments. On the second day, while observing the day long fast, they visit the shrines of Lord Shiva and spend the day dancing and singing together. On the third day ( Rishi Panchami), the Sapta Rishis (seven sages) are worshipped after a ritual bath.
