It's a New Week

Let's go to the bush to know more about Tanzania wildlife's

Common Name : Hippopotamus
Scientific Name : Hippopotamus amphibius
Nickname : River Horse
Swahili Name : Kiboko

Meet them at the most of Tanzania National Parks from Northern to Eastern and Southern

We love hippo and could sit for hours on end watching them interact with one another.

Hippo’s Cannot Swim – We Know, It’s Shocking!
Hippos spend pretty much their whole lives in water, so it really doesn’t sound right when you hear that they actually cannot swim. It is true though, the main reason they spend so much time in the water is mainly to protect their extremely sensitive skin from the harsh African sun.

Many people think hippos are great swimmers when in reality, they cannot swim at all!

When you see a hippo in a body of water, they’reactually balancing on their tippy-toes or standing on a sandbank. Hippo’s sink when in deep water, which isn’t too surprising considering males can weigh up to 3 200 kg’s! So when a hippo is underwater, they aren’t swimming but rather trotting along on the bottom.

They Have Incredibly Sensitive Skin
If you’ve ever seen a hippo basking in the sun, you may have noticed what seems to be blood dripping from their skin. There is no need to be alarmed though, this substance is, in fact, a built-in “Hippo Sunblock” which is oily and red in colour. It not only provides much-needed protection from the sun’s rays, but is also an effective moisturiser and germ-killer, too.

They Cannot Breathe Underwater
While they do spend most of their time submerged in water, hippos need to resurface every 3 – 5 minutes to breathe. They even do this when sleeping! The motion of surfacing and breathing through their nostrils is an automatic one, so hippos who are deep in their slumber will still subconsciously rise to the top for a breath of air.

Hippos Are Territorial – But Only In Water
Water is a safe place for hippo, two of the most important things in their life takes place in water, mating and giving birth. Most people know that the hippo is an aggressiveanimal but they are only known to show territorial behaviour when submerged. If threatened on land, most hippo will run for cover in water nearby.

A hippo charges. You can really see the power these creatures hold.

What most people see as a yawn is actually a sign of aggression, this is why you only see hippo’s “yawning” when in water – they’re actually showing you how big their teeth are, leaving you to daydream about how they can hurt you…

Hippos are also known to make honking or grunting sounds whilst in water to mark their territory.

They Are Not Big Eaters
Becuase of their humungous size, one would be forgiven for thinking hippos eat a lot, but this is actually not true. A male hippo can weigh anywhere between 1 600 kg – 3 200 kg and females can weigh between 650 kg – 2 350 kg – pretty impressive! Yet they only eat between 1 and 1,5 % of their body weight every day.

Hippo forage for food at night so as to escape the heat of the day.

Hippos forage for food at night – they are herbivores and will eat any plant that comes their way but mainly snack on grass as it’s their favourite. Even though they are surrounded by aquatic plants for most of the day, it is still not understood exactly why hippo do not eat these plants but rather opt to search for food on land. Hippo can walk up to 5 miles in search of food and spend around 5 hours a night grazing.

The Reasons for a private Kilimanjaro Climb

A private Kilimanjaro climb in Tanzania offers a unique and personalized experience for those seeking a more customized approach to their ascent of Africa’s highest peak. While group climbs can be a fun and social experience, a private climb has several advantages that may be worth considering.

First and foremost, a private Kilimanjaro climb allows you to set your own pace and schedule. You won’t have to worry about keeping up with the group or feeling rushed, as you’ll have the flexibility to climb at your own speed and take breaks as needed. This can help you acclimatize more effectively to the altitude, which is a key factor in reaching the summit successfully.

A private climb also allows you to choose your own route, depending on your preferences, experience, and fitness level. You can work with your tour operator to design a customized itinerary that takes into account your goals, interests, and abilities. This can help you optimize your chances of reaching the summit while also enjoying the journey and taking in the stunning natural surroundings.
Another advantage of a private Kilimanjaro climb is the personalized attention and support you’ll receive from your guide and support staff. With a smaller group, you’ll have more one-on-one time with your guide, who can offer personalized advice, support, and encouragement throughout the climb. You’ll also have a dedicated support staff, including porters and cooks, who will cater to your needs and make your climb as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.

A private Kilimanjaro climb can also offer a more exclusive and intimate experience, away from the crowds and noise of group climbs. You’ll have the chance to connect with nature and your inner self, enjoying the peace and solitude of the mountain environment. This can be a deeply enriching and transformative experience, especially for those seeking spiritual or personal growth

It's a New Week

Let's gets to the Bush and discover some facts about Tanzania best wildlife's

Common Name : Aadvark
The name aardvark is an Afrikaans word which literally means Earth pig
Scientific name: Orycteropus afer
Habitat: Grassland & woodland
Adult weight: 60–80kg

Aardvarks have long, sticky tongues, which can be up to 12 inches (30 centimeters) long

Despite being one of Tanzania’s most widespread large mammals, the secretive nature of aardvarks means they are rarely seen. Night drives provide the best chance of seeing these elusive and unusual creatures.

Aardvarks are relatively common in Tanzania: they occupy a variety of habitats from open grasslands to dense forests, and can be found wherever termites are abundant and the ground is not too rocky. However their nocturnal habits make them hard to see.

Aardvarks routinely roam up to 5km each night in search of ants and termites, with their most active periods being between midnight and 05:00. Aardvarks dig their own deep burrows, which are often later used by other animals, especially warthogs.

Despite their relatively high population, they are particularly vulnerable to habitat loss and they are also hunted for food in rural parts of Tanzania

Best Park to see them : Tarangire National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Serengeti National Park

Lake Natron

Located in northern Tanzania, near the border with neighbouring Kenya, Lake Natron is situated north east of the Ngorongoro Crater. The landscape is dominated by Ol Doinyo Lengai, an active volcano which is just south of Lake Natron.

The lake has a maximum length of 56km and a width of 22km

One of the most striking features of Lake Natron is its striking red coloration

The primary reason for its hue lies in its extreme alkalinity. With pH levels often exceeding 10, the lake provides a suitable habitat for certain types of microorganisms, including salt-loving algae and bacteria. These microorganisms thrive in the high-saline, high-pH conditions of the lake. The presence of large quantities of haloarchaea, known for its red pigmentation, gives the lake its characteristic deep red and pink color

Lake Natron is the primary breeding site for the lesser flamingos

The lake is the one of the most serene lakes in Africa, but it's also the source of some of the most phantasmagorical photographs ever captured

The best time to visit Lake Natron is during the dry season from late May to early November since these months are slightly cooler.
The area is too hot during the short dry season from December to February. In August, the flamingos start to gather at the lake and continue to amass until October

Olduvia Gorge is a must-see experience for anyone interested in archeology and human evolution

It is easy to get to as it lies off the road linking the Ngorongoro Crater rim with the Serengeti.

The Olduvai Gorge or Oldupai Gorge is a paleoanthropological site in the eastern Serengeti Plain, near northern Tanzania, in East Africa

The gorge is nicknamed the “Cradle of Mankind” because it is believed to be the site of found remains of the first human beings to walk on Earth

Keeping a Slow and Steady Pace is Essential for a Successful Climb of Mt Kilimanjaro

Keeping the correct pace and heart rates at altitude is essential

Slow and steady wins the race. When taking on a challenge like Kilimanjaro , Acclimatization to the low levels of oxygen in the mountains requires you to take your time, to slowly get your body used to lack of oxygen. This is absolutely key to your success on the mountain.

Your goal each day should be to get from point A to point B, using as little amount of energy as possible. The summit night on Kilimanjaro is extremely difficult, any you will need every bit of energy you can muster up to complete it! So, lower on the trail, you don’t want to waste this valuable energy.

We have five guides and assistant guides in a group of ten trekkers on Kilimanjaro. On the summit night, we have one to one support going up. Our team is there to make sure you are safe and successful and will also set the pace.

One guide will always be at the front of the line, managing the pace. Nobody is allowed to go faster than the pace set out by our team. After years of experience, we have set a pace on our trips that gives everyone the chance to be safe and successful in reaching the summit. Especially on the summit night, the only thing you will want to focus on is putting one foot in front of the other and breathing! Every breath you take should be deep, in from the nose and out from the mouth, to supply your body the most efficient levels of oxygen.

Nam Africa Adventure is here to give you Kilimanjaro important tips and making sure you have a very successful summit

Common Name : Topi
Scientific name : Damaliscus lunatus

Considered to be one of the most social mammal species of the Serengeti

They live in herds of 15 to 20, but have been seen in groups numbering in the hundreds

The social structure is considered very flexible for herd animals, although they are led by a dominant male

When large herds take a break from movement, the males create for themselves separate mini-territories in which they keep their females. Males vie for their own territory at the age of 4 or 5 years, but very few are yet powerful enough to win them.

Mating is done strictly within the territories of the dominant males and timed so that birth occurs during seasons where feeding grasses are plentiful. Usually, this means breeding is done once per year, but in particularly good years, they will adjust and breed two or more times.

Topi do not limit their sociability to their own species. They can often be found among herds of other antelope, wildebeests, zebras, or even ostriches. Because they love to be around other species, they often must compete with them for resources such as food and water. Limited resources are their biggest threat, because of their speed.

However, they still serve as prey for fast cats such as leopards and cheetahs. As well, they can also be hunted by lions and hyenas

Lake Ngozi

Thrilling Crater Lake in Southern Highlands of Tanzania

Standing as the second largest Crater Lake in Africa, Ngozi Lake is the leading tourist attraction in Rungwe district pulling hundreds of visitors each year.

The lake is located about 38 kilometers south of Mbeya city, near the sprawling Tukuyu Township. It is located on Ngosi peak on the Uporoto Mountains which makes part of Eastern Arc ranges.

It is located at an uplift of 2,600 meters above sea level in a thick, natural forest of the Uporoto nature reserve, covering some 9,332 hectares of land. It has a length of 2.5 kilometers and width of 1.5 kilometers and 75 meters deep.

To reach the lake, one has to drive and stop at the edge of the Uporoto Forest Reserve at the foothills of the Uporoto range. It takes up to two hours walking from the foothill to the ridge where the lake lies at 200 meters below

18/03/2024

The highest campsite on Mount Kilimanjaro is known as Crater Camp. It lies 18,865 feet above sea level, which is a mere 475 feet below the summit. The site is next to one of Kilimanjaro’s last remaining glaciers known as Furtwangler Glacier.

The chance to be up close to Kilimanjaro’s glaciers is certainly tempting. As is the opportunity to do the optional hike to explore Kilimanjaro’s ash pit. The sites are both truly splendid. Not many people visit these areas.

But Crater Camp does come with additional risks.

Climbers who sleep at Crater Camp are subject to a significant altitude jump, from around 15,000 feet the night before, to nearly 19,000 feet. For all other routes, climbers do not spend a significant time at these elevations as they summit and descend immediately.

Spending the night at almost 19,000 feet is hard on the body, which makes altitude sickness a real concern.

Also, should someone become ill during the night, and need to be evacuated, it is much harder to execute under darkness.

We offer the opportunity to stay at Crater Camp on our longest routes – the Lemosho and Northern Circuit routes – for the best chance of sufficient acclimatization

The 9 Days Lemosho Crater Route and 10 Days Northern Crater Route are done only by special request and are subject to approval
