Our chefs are professionally trained to prepare tasty and nutritious food on the mountain. They often work in harsh conditions – in howling winds or ice rain using only gas stoves in a kitchen tent or a small hut. They can conjure up substantial cooked breakfasts and delicious and hearty 3-course dinners with warm soups prepared with fresh vegetables, a mouth-watering main course such as pasta with a rich meat sauce and vegetables or pancakes followed by a dessert or a plate of fruits for something sweet.
They get up when it is still dark in the mornings to boil drinking water for the day’s hike and go to sleep after every guest and porter has been fed. Our chefs can also cater for vegetarians, vegan or climbers with food allergies or intolerances or any other special dietary requirements such as Halal and Kosher, by prior arrangement.
There are fifteen cooks permanently working with our company and they all receive regular training in new techniques and recipes.

7 Days Lemosho Route is the best for acclimatization. The remote is less used and beautiful way up to the Shira Plateau. The minimum duration for the Lemosho route is 6 days, however we strongly recommend hiking the route in 7 days. The additional 7th day will give your body more time to acclimatize, reducing the effects of altitude sickness and give you more time to rest before attempting the summit.

The Kilimanjaro success rate for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is often reported as 50%.
One might assume that reaching Africa’s highest peak would not be easy. After all, it is 19,341 feet high – an extreme altitude. However, when looking at Kilimanjaro’s route profiles and itineraries, along with its nontechnical ascent, it would seem that more than half the people who attempt it should succeed.
So, why is it that people fail?
Here are the main reasons why individuals fail to successfully climb Kilimanjaro.
Getting up to the top of Kilimanjaro requires a decent level of physical ability. Not surprisingly, one of the primary reasons for unsuccessful attempts on Kilimanjaro is inadequate fitness. The mountain presents many successive days of hiking at progressively higher elevations. This presents a demanding physical challenge. For those who are not used to hiking for several hours per day, their muscles may struggle to recover from the exercise.
As the days go on, and the elevation gets higher and higher, the body becomes worn down. To make matters worse, the grueling summit attempt occurs during the final days, when the overworked body is begging for a break. The typical summit day takes 10-14 hours, but can be much longer. For those who lack fitness, this may be too strenuous.
The solution here is obvious. Train for your climb. The better shape you are in, the higher your chances of succeeding. So plan out your training schedule for the months leading up to your climb and stick with it.

Is the Barranco Camp for Me?
The Barranco Wall on Mt Kilimanjaro forms part of your early morning exercise on day 4 for climbers on the Machame, Shira, Umbwe and Lemosho Route.
The Barranco Wall looks a lot more ominous than it actually is.
You need no technical climbing skills to be able to scale the Barranco wall.

The young and the old have conquered Kilimanjaro.
Anyone with a reasonable degree of fitness can climb Kilimanjaro. Here is the proof.
The oldest person to successfully climb Kilimanjaro is 89 year old American woman Anne Lorimor, She took the world record in 2019 from Dr. Fred Distelhorst, who was 88 when he summited
The youngest person to climb Kilimanjaro is American Coaltan Tanner, who summited at age six in 2018. The youngest girl to summit is Ashleen Mandrick, who was also six years old when she accomplished the feat, wrestling that title away from Montannah Kenney, who was seven.
The minimum age for climbing Kilimanjaro is 10 years old, but the park authority grants exceptions to children who have significant experience trekking.

DUFFER BAG FOR KILIMANJARO
For Kilimanjaro, climb you will need two bags – a daypack (or backpack) and a duffer bag. Climbers are responsible for carrying only what they might need in their backpack during the hikes between camps. All the other belongings (sleeping bag, toiletries, extra clothing) should be stored inside a duffer bag which our porter will carry from camp to camp
biggest decision when it comes to the duffer bag is the capacity. You want to make sure you can fit all of your gear inside. This includes the sleeping bag, which usually takes up the most space. The duffer bag capacity we recommend is between 70 to 90 liters of space
This is admittedly a wide range but it depends on the amount of gear that each individual client bring
While some experienced minimalist backpackers easily fit everything into a 50 liter bag, others struggle even with a 90 liter bag. We feel that a 70 liter duffe should work for nearly everyone, but if you are going out to purchase a bag, on the side of a larger duffel bag. Just remember that although there is no volume limit on what our porters will carry, there is a strict weight limit of 15 kilograms, which amounts to about 33 pounds.

ARE THERE SHOWERS ON KILIMANJARO?

TIPS FOR RAINY SEASON KILIMANJARO TREKS
If one does plan on climbing during the rainy season, consider the following to improve your experience:
The northern part of the mountain receives less rain than the southern parts. Therefore, Rongai Route is the preferred route when climbing during the rainy season. Marangu Route is also good route because of the hut accommodations. At times, the Lemosho and Shira Route may be inaccessible due to road conditions on the west.
Climb during the shoulder seasons. Being on the front or tail end of the rainy seasons could increase the chances of you experiencing nice weather.
Quality rain gear is essential. Climbers should make sure that they have waterproof, breathable jacket, pants and boots. The day pack and duffel should be well protected from rain with backpack covers or plastic bags. Everything inside the pack and duffel should be stored in ziplock bags or waterproof stuff sacks as well.
The difficulty of a route increases with bad weather. So do the dangers. When climbing during the rainy season, it is better to plan less strenuous itineraries to be on the safe side.

It’s important that you take some time to consider what you’re going to eat on Kilimanjaro. In particular, remember to tell your agency if you have any special dietary requirements. This is important because both meat and nuts form a substantial part of the food on Kilimanjaro.
One of the marvels of a trek on the Roof of Africa is the skill with which the cooks can conjure up tasty and nutritious food. That they manage to do this despite the restrictions on both equipment and ingredients is amazing. Even birthday cakes are possible (without an oven, remember!)
They are also able to obey almost any dietary restrictions, so that vegans, vegetarians, gluten and lactose intolerants are all catered for. In addition, those with restrictions due to their religious beliefs are also accommodated. All you have to do, if you have any sort of dietary requirements, is to tell your company in advance.

We have carefully researched and selected what we believe to be the best 4-season mountain tent available, the Kailas X4 II Alpine Tent. This high-quality, durable tent has several features which make it best-suited to Kilimanjaro conditions. Although the manufacturer describes this as a 4- to 5- person tent, please note that at Uprise Africa Tours we only put two climbers in it. This ensures maximum comfort and gives climbers extra room to move around and to store their duffel bag and daypack.
A mattress is an essential for a good night’s sleep. What we provide to our climbers is a 1.5 inch-thick foam sleeping mattress, which we source in Tanzania and which is better than other commercially available alternatives. Our own tailors make a washable cover for each mattress, to ensure cleanliness.
