Nyungwe is the quintessential tropical rainforest, its misty hills resounding with birdsong and the calls of .

The heart of Nyungwe Forest is like a scene from a fairy tale. Tall old mahoganies, ebonies and giant tree ferns tower above you, whilst orchids and other epiphytes cling to every branch.

Gorilla Trekking Safaris

The Virunga Mountains that straddle the borders of Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo are home to around 480 mountain gorillas, more than half of the world’s entire population; the rest live in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda). In Rwanda, ten gorilla family groups in Volcanoes National Park are now habituated for gorilla safaris, more than anywhere else in the world.

The various groups and their locations will obviously change from time to time: mountain gorillas often climb higher in the dry season and descend during the rains, they might move on due to pressure from wild gorillas, and individuals will often join other groups. Although you may request to visit a specific group on arrival at the park headquarters, this can never be guaranteed.

The Musanze Cave is 2km long and the most frequently visited. It is on the Innes University grounds and lies in the volcanic region dating back 65 million years, where the lava flows contributed to the Albertine Rift Valley.

The cave is part of the lava basaltic layers from the Bisoke and Sabyinyo volcanoes.
The cave has 31 entrances, most being roof collapses. The main cave has an entrance the size of a cathedral and is home to a sizeable bat colony. The collapses create an incredible array of coloured shafts of light shining into the cave.

You can have the caving activity as an add-on to your safari in Rwanda and Volcanoes National Park.

Uganda's smallest park (Mgahinga Gorilla National Park) is home to some of the country's less known primates, Cercopithecus kandt, a subspecies of the Blue monkey- Golden Monkeys.

You might not get as close to the golden monkeys as you may to the gorillas, but their antics are fun to watch and the bamboo forests, which they inhabit, are an interesting environment.

Lions stalk their prey and when close enough, attempt a short charge, either pouncing on their target or bowling it over.
Once the lion has its jaws clamped around its victim's throat death is swift, either by suffocation or a broken neck. The stomach is usually the easiest point of entry into the carcass, and this is the route most often taken by lions.
It also gives them direct access to some of the most nutritious parts of the body, such as the kidneys and liver of the prey. Lions usually rest after an initial feed, lying a short way away from the carcass so that they can still defend their kill against scavengers.

By far the biggest of the so-called Big Five – indeed, the largest land animal on the planet – the elephant shapes the very landscape it inhabits and is a defining presence on any safari. The elephant familiar to most safari-goers is, technically speaking, the African bush elephant, a distinct species from the smaller African forest elephant (L. cyclotis). The Common Patas Monkeys, unlike other primates they rarely take refuge from predators in trees. This is most likely due to the relatively sparse tree cover in their habitat- they are mostly found in the Savanna spaces. They are fast primates with a max speed of 30 miles per hour.
