4&20 Antique Copper

Prior to the launch of Four & Twenty Antique Copper, Ginger Tuttle was a curator for a major art museum.

The work sometimes involved travel to Europe, and it was there that Ginger first discovered antique copper cookware. In her spare time she was able to wander through cities, markets, and shops in pursuit of her new-found passion: Antique copper cookware. Ginger fell in love with the history, lore and uses of antique copper. Soon her small house was filled with fine examples from Great Britain and

France. Motivated by the astonishing beauty of these pieces, Ginger began to study antique copper with the same intensity and interest that she had previously devoted to the study of fine art. Ginger recognized that understanding this magnificent copper would require knowledge of the history of cuisine, technology, and social change along with traditional methods of hand-working copper. Four & Twenty Antique Copper introduces you to Ginger’s vast knowledge and expert eye. Here you will find a 19th Century dovetailed saucepan from France, an English chocolate pot, and many other fine examples from this classic cooking genre. Ginger is always searching out both the classic and unusual pieces. Virginia Tuttle, owner of Four & Twenty Antique Copper in Camden, Maine presents on copper cookware, which has long been the favorite culinary equipment of serious chefs in Europe and the United States. This illustrated presentation will identify when and for whom craftsmen first produced copper pots and pans, and how newly developed technology made this possible. It will further explain the techniques coppersmiths used to create their wares and will examine the various types of copper cookware that are found in today’s antique market.

Tuttle first discovered her passion for antique copper cookware while working and traveling in Europe. Falling in love with the history, lore and uses of copperware throughout history, she began to study the history of cuisine, technology, social change and methods of hand-working copper. She now searches for unique pieces in both Europe and the United States.

Tuttle will be a participating dealer at this year’s Ellsworth Antiques Show at Woodlawn, August 17 to 19.
