~The John H. Stevens House~
Built in 1850, this was the first privately-owned residence in what would soon be named Minneapolis.
It was in this house that the new village name was adopted. An earlier suggestion, "Minnehapolis", was rejected.
Stevens (1820-1900) operated the ferry boat between St. Anthony, on the east side of the river, and the west bank. At the time, the area was controlled by the Army, which permitted Stevens to operate his vital business and live there.
In the years 1850-1855, this house became the civic and social hub of the new city, earning it the name "The Birthplace of Minneapolis".
In 1896, it was moved to Minnehaha Park, near Minnehaha Falls, where it sits today, as pictured below.
Where it originally sat, is today where the Main Post Office sits.
Noteworthy: the first bridge over the river opened in 1853, thus eliminating Stevens' occupation.
