It's Tiara Tuesday! The Braganza Tiara

Crowned in 1822, Pedro I, Emperor of Brazil and King of Portugal, assumed the throne with first wife, Empress Maria Leopoldina of Austria, sister of Empress Marie Louise.

The Empress passed in 1826, leaving her diamonds to her children.

Pedro purchased the diamonds from the children and used them to create the Braganza tiara in 1829 as a wedding present for his second wife, Amélie of Leuchtenberg, granddaughter of Josephine de Beauharnais.

The diamonds are said to be Brazilian and the tiara is thought have been made in France, maker unknown.

The five inch tall piece features floral and foliate detail, and weighs 6.6lbs (although this weight has been disputed).

Pedro dies in 1834, and Amelie dies in 1873, having outlived her daughter. Her jewels are left to her sister, Queen Josephine of Sweden and Norway. The tiara remains in the Swedish royal family and has been worn most recently by Queen Silvia, who is said to enjoy it because of her own Brazilian heritage. Via jewelryathenaeum on IG
