We conclude our South Dakota virtual trip with a book: Deadwood by Pete Dexter

Deadwood, Dakota Territories, 1876: Legendary gunman Wild Bill Hickcock and his friend Charlie Utter have come to the Black Hills town of Deadwood fresh from Cheyenne, fleeing an ungrateful populace. Bill, aging and sick but still able to best any man in a fair gunfight, just wants to be left alone to drink and play cards. But in this town of played-out miners, bounty hunters, upstairs girls, Chinese immigrants, and various other entrepeneurs and miscreants, he finds himself pursued by a vicious sheriff, a perverse w***e man bent on revenge, and a besotted Calamity Jane. Fueled by liquor, s*x, and violence, this is the real wild west, unlike anything portrayed in the dime novels that first told its story.

Hidden Treasure, Custer State Park

Few truly wild places remain in this country. Custer State Park is one of them. Nearly 1,300 bison wander the park’s 71,000 acres, which they share with pronghorn antelope, elk, mountain goats and a band of burros. Trail rides, scenic drives, bike rides and safari tours are perfect ways to explore this impressive South Dakota attraction.

At 31 miles away, Rapid City is the nearest major city to Custer State Park. Other notable cities in the region include Casper, Wyoming (213 miles away), Gillette, Wyoming (127 miles away), Denver (360 miles away) and Minneapolis (600 miles away).

One of the 10 Most Outstanding Byways in America!

Some of the most incredible roads anywhere make up the Peter Norbeck National Scenic Byway in the Black Hills of western South Dakota. Mix in America’s most patriotic monument along the way and you have a never-to-be-forgotten road trip.

A masterpiece of artistic engineering, this 70-mile byway includes spiraling bridges, hairpin curves, granite tunnels and awe-inspiring views.

Roughly a figure-eight route, the byway travels through portions of Custer State Park, the Norbeck Wildlife Preserve, near Mount Rushmore National Memorial and the Black Elk National Wilderness Area. Highways 16A, 244, 89 and 87 combine to create the route.

Spend your weekend wrapped in mystery with a book set in the Olympic Peninsula: Joseph and the Tamanawis Spirit by Dawn Lawrence

Written by a Native American woman who has lived in Neah Bay, WA, for over thirty years, this story takes off when strange things begin happening on the Makah Reservation.

Fawn and Dennis Miller suspect an evil spirit is leading Nicolai Vain down a dangerous path. When Dennis and Fawn's son, Joseph TaHayYasib Miller, becomes Nicolai's target, they prepare for an epic battle, with the world's fate hanging in the balance. Joseph gathers his friends, otherwise known as the Star Fire Crew, to capture Nicolai and banish his spirit. But when Nicolai's powers transform their Makah Indian friends into devilish henchmen known as Pook Men, Joseph and the Star Fire Crew find themselves in trouble. In the heat of the battle, Fawn is rendered unconscious but manages to find herself in the spirit world, able to fight Nicolai Vain's dark power. Will she survive and fight in the spirit realm? Will Joseph and the Star Fire Crew succeed in stopping Nicolai Vain and the Pook Men? Or will the world fall into Nicolai's malevolent hands?

Hoh Rain Forest: feed your need for nature under a canopy of trees.

The Hoh Rain Forest, pronounced "Hoe", earns its name from the ever-flowing Hoh River that carves its way from Mount Olympus towards the Pacific Coast. However, where the name originates, is up for debate. The word "Hoh" undoubtedly comes from Native American languages, possibly the Quileute word "Ohalet" which means "fast moving water" or "snow water."

The diverse and dramatic Hoh Rain Forest is one of the most popular destinations on the Olympic Peninsula and beyond. Lush greenery abounds, thanks to an average 168 inches of annual rainfall. Mosses and ferns that blanket the surfaces add another dimension to the enchantment of the rainforest.

Explore rushing rivers, tumbling waterfalls and miles of trails through dense rain and old-growth forests. Herds of Roosevelt elk will accompany your views.

Hiking in the Olympic Peninsula: the Dungeness Spit

The Olympic Peninsula is home to the longest natural sand spit in North America. The Dungeness Spit just north of Sequim boasts breathtaking views, rich maritime history and an abundance of wildlife. It stretches nearly seven miles north into the Strait of Juan de Fuca and continues to grow by around 13 feet each year. Hiking the Dungeness Spit is a rewarding experience for all levels of physical ability.

If the New Dungeness Lighthouse is your goal, walk 5.5 miles along the sandy spit until the very tip. The lighthouse has kept its light on continuously since 1857. Visit the museum, take a free, guided tour offered daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and climb the 74 stairs to the top for a panoramic view of the spit, Strait of Juan de Fuca and Canada.

Be sure to pack food and water and check the tides before you go. Volunteers are on hand to offer helpful tips and guidance.

Happy Reading!

We are going to end the week with a book suggestion: A Painted House by John Grisham, set in Arkansas.

The story is inspired by Grisham’s own childhood in rural Arkansas. The narrator is a farm boy named Luke Chandler, age seven, who lives in the cotton fields with his parents and grandparents in a little house that's never been painted. The Chandlers farm eighty acres that they rent, not own, and when the cotton is ready they hire a truckload of Mexicans and a family from the Ozarks to help harvest it.

For six weeks they pick cotton, battling the heat, the rain, the fatigue, and sometimes each other. As the weeks pass Luke sees and hears things no seven-year-old could possibly be prepared for, and he finds himself keeping secrets that not only threaten the crop but will change the lives of the Chandlers forever.

Go Chasing Waterfalls!

The location of waterfalls in Arkansas’s scenic landscapes make them all the better. The journeys are as rewarding as the destination. Here are just some of the most famous falls in the state:

Crooked Creek Falls - In the Ouachita National Forest between Mena and Hot Springs,

Waterfall at Papoose Park - Found smack in the middle of Cherokee Village!

Collins Creek Falls - in Heber Springs, Collins Creek Trailhead is on Hatchery Road. The falls are not far from the trailhead and are easily accessible by a short hike
