It’s tough to beat this front-row seat to all the wildlife action!

This is the Saddle-billed Stork, also known as the Silent Giant due its impressive size (they stand at nearly 150 cm (59 inches) tall with a wingspan of up to 2.7 m (8.9 feet), and the fact that they lack a syrinx, the vocal organ in birds. Rather than tweet, hoot, caw or coo, they communicate by noisily clattering their bills together!

This beautiful photo was taken at in Timbavati Private Game Reserve in the Greater Kruger, but we've also seen many of them in Botswana's Okavango Delta.

This captivating photograph from Simbavati Collection beautifully captures the vivid contrast between a zebra's stripes and the bright red and yellow bill of a yellow-billed oxpecker. The bill is sturdy yet short, making it ideal for removing insects from animals like zebras. These birds can consume up to 1000 ticks or over 10,000 larvae in a single day. Not only do they feed while perched on the beautiful zebra, but they also use the plucked hair to line their nests. Known in Swahili as the Rhino's Guard, the oxpecker is alert to danger and besides providing a daily spa service to its host, its shrill call serves as an early warning system for potential threats. A win-win relationship all around!

Can you identify any of the things we spotted?
When you first visit Africa, you will most probably arrive with a list of must sees and do's. This is totally normal. But like anywhere, it's often the things you least expect that really grab your attention. This is why we love recommending walking safaris! Even though you don't get up close to the big animals on foot, you see evidence of them wherever you look. More than this, it’s the very small things that are often the most fascinating. Like these little finds we made along the way while walking at Simbavati Trails Camp.

We'd love to hear the most fascinating thing you learnt while out in the bush?

1. Hyena p**p

2. Impala Lily - renowned for its striking appearance and adaptability to arid environments. It's dazzling blooms punctuate the dry brown bushveld in bright clusters of incongruous pink, embodying the resilience of Africa's fauna.

3. Assegai Grass or Speargrass. Another remarkable adaptation to conquer the hardy soils of the bushveld. The seed becomes a sharp spike that straightens when moistened and when doing so the ‘spear’ is capable of drilling the seed into the soil!

4. Kudu horns (Someone's leftovers no doubt!)

5. Lion tracks!

6. An abandoned nest of a very small and beautiful little bird called a blue waxbill. So very delicate, made from the lightest fluffiest grasses you can imagine. The breeding season is over and so the nest is no longer needed.

Rushing rapids, a rugged landscape of undulating hills, rocky outcrops, and a horizon studded with the imposing silhouettes of the iconic baobab, Ruaha National Park epitomises the definition of "Wild Africa". And then there's Jongomeru... Nestled in this wild paradise, the camp looks out onto the seasonal Jongomero River, with tents raised on wooden platforms under enormous thatched roofs, sited along a natural pathway for animals in search of water.

Days at Jongomeru are effortless. The wonderful team are always on hand to pamper you and plan the day's activities so you don't have to. You might spend the day traversing the winding roads of the park, tracking the extraordinary diversity of animals, plants and birdlife here, or choose to relax at the camp, book in hand, cold drink at the ready, watching the wildlife meander by. And in the evening, after dining on Chef Juma's extraordinary creations and warming yourself around an open fire, fall asleep to the evocative sounds of the African bush, snuggled under comfy warm quilts in a bed big enough to get lost in, recalling fireside stories about life in this remote outpost.

It’s sunrise at MalaMala and the Ntsevu female is leading her boisterous cubs to a recent kill. She’s patient but determined and has a no-nonsense way about her. The little ones bumble along, getting distracted by each other and smells in the bush, but in the end they’ll follow mom wherever she goes. Even if it means going ‘cold water swimming’ on a chilly winter morning in the Mala Mala game reserve. Completely unperturbed by the vehicles following them! I don't think that I can explain to people what it is like to see what amazing places South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Botswana really are without showing photos and yammering on for hours about it. I loved the interactions between the animals (elephant babies, fighting baboons, lion stalking, baby leopards). Two particular moments stand out and both were at Mana Pools: the first was canoeing down the Zambezi river. Being out on the river and experiencing an elephant eating but standing so much higher than us on a small island was beautiful. The scale difference of being in the river and so close versus seeing the elephants from the land rover was such a moment of recognition and delight. The second was hearing my niece whisper-wake-me-up because an elephant was a mere foot away from our tent which was both shocking and thrilling. Thank you for planning such an exceptional trip. I will always treasure the amazing time with everyone who was there. It was SUPER RAD!!!!
