Sunny day in the Big Apple ☀️
When it comes to new developments in New York City, the supertall tower is still king: Many of the city’s most high-profile developments, from One World Trade Center to Central Park Tower, all exceed the 984-foot (300 meters) limit that takes a building from merely tall to supertall.
These soaring towers aren’t always popular—many have actively fought against the buildings sprouting along 57th Street and Central Park South, worried that they’ll cause shadowing over the storied park—but it’s hard to argue against their status as marvels of engineering.
But how many of these buildings does New York City have? We counted, and the number as of right now is 28; that includes buildings that are either completed, under construction, or in the proposal or development phases. Check them out in the picture gallery.

Forget the carbon-copied interiors of international hospitality chains; New York’s most well-dressed hotels prioritize one-off objects, sumptuous fabrics, and even simplicity in their designs. From a historic flight terminal-turned-lobby where Jet Age optimism is almost tangible, to a Bowery lodging where minimalism sets the tone, we’ve rounded up three New York hotels with interiors that set them apart from the pack.
1) Sister City | Lower East Side, Manhattan
Fans of minimalism will find comfort in this 200-room hotel from Atelier Ace whose aesthetic is “inspired by the functional perfection of Finnish saunas, Japanese bento boxes, rock-cut cliff dwellings of prehistory and John Cage’s ‘4’33,’” per the owners. Here, materials like terrazzo and Italian cherry-wood are paired with objects d’art like Noguchi lanterns and fixtures inspired by the Less, But Better philosophy of industrial designer Dieter Rams. The hotel also attempts to minimize unwanted interactions behind its Bowery facade: Check-in kiosks allow guests to bypass the ritual of a traditional front desk arrival, all to tunes created for the hotel by musician Julianna Barwick. Rooms start at $209/night.
2) One Hotel Brooklyn Bridge | DUMBO, Brooklyn
This 10-story eco-friendly hotel nestled in Brooklyn Bridge Park takes its design cues from the surrounding landscape (both natural and man-made.) INC Architecture & Design is responsible for the interiors, including the highly Instagrammable lobby. Reclaimed materials from local spots dot the 195-key hotel; keep an eye out for the original heart pine beams from the Domino Sugar Refinery and walnut from the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. Of course, the hotel’s unobstructed views of the Brooklyn Bridge and lower Manhattan skyline are as much a design factor as its raw concrete pillars and other earthy elements. Guest rooms overlooking the bridge and skyline go from $899/night, while views onto neighboring Dumbo will set guests back from $349/night.
3) TWA Hotel | John F. Kennedy Airport, Queens
Eero Saarinen’s architectural ode to the Jet Age reopened to the public in 2019. The circa-1962 terminal was completely restored under the eye of Richard Southwick of historic preservation firm Beyer Blinder Belle, and is as spectacular as ever. Its Sunken Lounge, once a waiting area for flyers, still stuns in Saarinen’s chili pepper red scheme and now serves as a 1960s-themed watering hole. The hotel’s 512 guest rooms, spread between two new towers by Lubrano Ciavarra Architects, were done up in a midcentury modern style by Stonehill Taylor and include themely touches like martini stations and vintage rotary phones. Rooms go from $249/night.

This is part two of our two-part series “The Most Beautiful Subway Stations In New York City”. Part one was published last Sunday. Please click thru our picture gallery.
Yes, New Yorkers are constantly complaining about subway service, but the malfunctioning trains and MetroCards have nothing to do with appreciating the beauty of some of NYC’s stations!
Having aesthetically pleasing and architecturally impressive stops is important. No, it shouldn’t come at the expense of timely trains and safe and functioning tracks but appreciating one doesn’t mean you have to excuse the other. So, we’ve decided to highlight some of the most beautiful stations in the city to keep things light. Check them out in the picture gallery.

Foggy night in Central Park.
Today is Valentine’s Day. You’ve just had an amazing date in New York—perhaps at one of the most romantic restaurants in the city—and now you’re looking to grab just one more drink to prolong the night. Luckily, the options are seemingly endless among the city’s most romantic bars. No matter what you choose to imbibe, there’s a spot for everyone, whether you’re looking for a cozy fireplace or a sleek wine bar for another round of drinks. Here are four handpicked recommendations by the LOCALIKE team:
1. June in Caroll Gardens, Brooklyn
Back when it opened in 2015, June helped put natural wine on Brooklynites’ radar. Today, interesting bottles continue to add to the allure of the ’20s-era Midnight in Paris vibes. With its curved oxblood banquettes, globe light fixtures and stemmed glasses hanging over a marble bar top, June is endlessly romantic.
2. Peppi’s Cellar in Nolita, Manhattan
Pass three spiral staircases inside the just-opened Italian restaurant Gran Tivoli to get to this semisecret cocktail lounge. Practically lifted from the set of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Peppi’s is all retro cool, with deep, intimate booths, antique lights and a tiny stage for lively jazz combos.
3. Angel’s Share in East Village, Manhattan
Walk through an unmarked side door at the front of Japanese restaurant Village Yokocho, and you’ll find yourself in perhaps the classiest joint in the East Village. Angel’s Share remains completely unknown to some of its neighbors; that duality is part of its charm. Standing around and groups of four or more are not allowed—but this is really a date place anyway, offering a stellar view of Stuyvesant Square, tuxedoed bartenders and excellent cocktails, including one of the city’s best grasshoppers.
4. Diamond Lil in Greenpoint, Brooklyn
One of our favorite romantic bars in Brooklyn is this special, small spot in Greenpoint, near McGorlick Park. The dark lighting, moody green wall colors and artful stain-glass details make it one of our go-to’s. It helps that most tables are set up only for two.
Happy Valentine’s Day! 💑❤️👩❤️👩❤️👨❤️👨

🎶 In New York, Concrete jungle where dreams are made of, There's nothin' you can't do, Now you're in New York. 🎶
A construction involving an institution as prestigious as the Museum of Modern Art is a rare occasion. So their ambitious plans by star architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro to substantially extend and convert the current space have received particular attention. The idea behind the design is to make the museum more open and welcoming; plans include revamping the museum's lobby and the famous Bauhaus staircase, expanding gallery space by 50,000 square feet (about 4,600 square meters), and opening up the east hall. The MoMa is always worth a visit, but after the completion of the work in 2019, we particularly recommend taking a look!
