Qatar Airways, Qatar Tourism Authority and Qatar’s Ministry of Interior announced today a revised tourism visa scheme available to passengers transiting through Doha in a move to promote Qatar as a world-class stopover destination.
The new transit visa structure now allows passengers with a minimum transit time of five hours in Hamad International Airport, to stay in Qatar for up to 96 hours (four days), without the requirement to apply ahead of time for an entry visa.
The Qatar transit visa is free of charge and available on arrival at Hamad International Airport to passengers of all nationalities, upon confirmation of onward journey and completion of passport control procedures. All visas are approved and issued at the sole discretion of the Ministry of Interior.
China: Hundreds of flights cancelled, delayed at airports in Beijing and Tianjin because of heavy rain
Thunderstorms and heavy rain have led to hundreds of flight cancellations and delays at airports in Beijing and neighbouring Tianjin.
About 120 flights scheduled to leave Beijing Capital International Airport from midnight to 11pm on Wednesday have been cancelled, while no flights have landed or taken off at Tianjin Binhai International Airport since about 3am today.
The Beijing airport issued an alert earlier that strong rainfall would continue from early morning to about 3pm and there would be showers until 10pm. The airport authorities asked passengers to keep a close eye on flight information and the weather forecast.
Binhai Airport also warned that the weather would continue to affect flights until about 4pm. The last flight to arrive at the airport landed at 2.56 am.
The torrential rain has hit areas neighbouring the two cities and was the heaviest since the start of the summer, meteorologists said.
France has been stunned again as a large white truck mowed through a crowd of revellers gathered for a Bastille Day fireworks display in the Riviera city of Nice, killing at least 80 and leaving what one witness said was "bodies everywhere."
The attack Thursday night on France's national holiday rocked a nation still dealing with the shock of the attacks last November in Paris that killed 130. Flags were lowered to half-staff in Nice and in Paris.
Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve, who travelled to the scene, said another 18 people were seriously hurt. He said police were trying to determine the driver's identity, refusing to confirm reports an ID card had been found in the truck. President Hollande said a state of emergency — which was to have ended July 26 — would be extended for three months. First imposed after the November attacks, it has been renewed every three months.

TRAVEL ALERT : NEW CHECK-IN TIMES FOR DOMESTIC SAA FLIGHTS FROM JOHANNESBURG
- South African Airways (SAA) has announced that flights on domestic routes from Johannesburg will be closing check-in gates 10 minutes earlier than usual, come 1 April 2016.
Previously SAA closed all domestic flights for check-in 30 minutes before boarding, but this has now been changed to 40 minutes before departure for all SAA’s domestic flights on departures only from Johannesburg to Durban, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and East London.
“The reason for closing flights earlier is to allow the airline to conclude all departure procedures timeously especially those relating to baggage, so that our customers may not be inconvenienced by possibly travelling with their baggage left behind,” SAA Spokesperson Tlali Tlali says.
SAA says the change for their earlier check-in close only applies to departures to other domestic stations within South Africa from Johannesburg only and will not affect minimum connecting time. Flights will close sooner but would not have an impact on current boarding times which will not be changed at all.

Low cost airline Mango today announced that the airline will reduce its fares on all routes, rolling out with immediate effect. The move comes as the airline passes on benefits to travellers following a recent reduction in the cost of fuel, despite currency weakness continuing to impact input costs. Travellers should expect to pay from R 395 one way between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth while reductions in fares across all other network points will be rolled out this week. The airline will also continue to monitor the downward movement in the cost of fuel and, should further benefit be evidenced, further adjustments will be effected.
Acsa will, from Monday February 2, enforce new hand luggage allowances, with airlines warning passengers of potential delays at security check points. SAA and Mango released statements urging customers to check in well in advance and to stick to the cabin baggage regulations . Where hand luggage does not comply with the rules, passengers will be referred back to the check-in counters to check in the baggage as hold baggage. They warned that congestion might occur as every piece of baggage (checked and carry-on) having to be weighed and checked prior to boarding would extend the check-in process.
