The Role of Arts & Culture in Building Social Cohesion

Meet the Panelist:

Sipho is a youth and community recreational facilitator, and mobilizer. A performance artist, curator, and at the heart of it all, a storyteller.

His NPO Sofiretown Youth Crew was founded in 2010 as part of a project for the community of Sophiatown. The crew then ventured into organizations of art workshops, exhibitions, interview transcriptions, and also international youth exchanges. The home experience influenced his international youth exchanges as they were working at children's summer camps but with a community and recreational arts approach.

Sipho continued to freelance for other organizations in, and out of South Africa, and currently work with an art collective from Johannesburg, called Sophiatown Arts Festival. The collective was founded by artists, cultural practitioners, consultants, and community members from a civic engagement project in Sophiatown which was first started back in 2009. The project ended in 2014, but the individuals got together again to organize the first annual festival in 2019 in the heritage suburb of Sophiatown.

African Industrialisation Day

The sustainable, critical and inclusive economic growth of African countries effectively known as African industrialisation is celebrated annually on the 20th of November.

Since its inception on November 20 1989, experts have gone to assess the effectiveness of it's 50 year development trajectory for Africa and despite the UN's best efforts to raise awareness on this day, some disparities affecting African industrialisation remain prevalent. These include high levels of debt and lack of capital and skills.

On one hand, African industrialisation does not only create much needed jobs but it also contributes to economic growth by enhancing productive capacity. Ultimately poverty may be eradicated as African countries can diversify their economies and prevent excessive exposure to external shocks.

As challenging as it may seem, development is essential for African countries. It has the potential to help Africa overcome all it's major obstacles. This day is worthy of being commemorated.

Universal Children’s Day

Universal Children’s Day was first established in 1954 & is commemorated on the 20th of November of every year . It was established to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide & improve children’s welfare.

It is however an undeniable fact that there are inequalities among children in the globe. Some children across the globe are faced with malnutrition . Malnutrition occurs when children don’t consume enough calories to sustain their growing bodies. Malnutrition makes children more vulnerable to diseases and death.

Access to education is still a huge issue with 98 million children between ages 6-18 being out of school in sub Saharan Africa. Causing 168 million children to engage in child labor, most of whom live in areas affected by conflict and disaster instead of being at school and bettering their future they are forced to work where they are exploited just because they are young.

According to an article published by The World Health Organization , nearly 300 million children aged 2-4 years of age regularly suffer violence at the hands of parents or caregivers. Consequences of child abuse include “ impaired lifelong physical & mental health and social and occupational outcomes that can slow a countries economic & social developments”.

In this Universal Children’s Day lets strive to protect and better the lives of the many innocent children around the world , because they are tomorrow's future & today's treasure.

Nicknamed the 'Atlas Lions, ' Morocco 🇲🇦 is one of the 5 African countries that will be representing Africa in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Morocco's best World Cup came in 1986 when they surprised everyone by not only qualifying from a group consisting of England, Poland and Portugal but winning it. In the last 16 they pushed Germany all the way but lost to a Lothar Matthäus strike in the 88th minute.
