Our gardens are giving us one final show of autumn before winter becomes a reality.
Our visiting swallows did not manage to raise a family this year, sadly nature did not allow.
However, we have this beautiful family of wagtails that are raising their 2nd brood here.. Mom and Dad industriously feeding.

Absolutely wonderful!
The joy and passion the owners, Dorothy and Geoff have is so evident.
PUT ASIDE any mental images you have of the typical 'backpacker' accommodation. This is NOT THAT!
It is clean, comfortable, well provisioned and managed.
We had the privilege of using this as our family/friends base for a wedding at Lord's Wines and could not have asked for, or found a place more perfect in any way.
There aren't enough superlative adjectives available to describe the owners and the oasis for the body & soul they have created here. The attention to details covered, was way beyond the norm!

Having done some hiking in the area previously, we have a point of reference to compare to, so are not singing praises without foundation. Next time we hike Boesman'skloof, we know exactly where we will be staying.

This is just one of the reviews left on Tripadvisor by a guest who stayed with us at the end of February.
We are so thankful to each and every guest who comes to stay at our backpackers.

As we come to another Christmas, thoughts turn to family and friends.
In our case its all the wonderful folk that have come to stay during the year.
Its been a difficult year for sure but uplifted by our wonderful guests.
Geoff and I wish each and every guest a blessed Christmas spent with family and friends.
Lets be kind as we think about those that are lonely or depressed and for whom holidays are not a happy time.
If you know someone like that, reach out and make a difference in their life, it may be a small thing to you but will make a big difference to the recipient.

This is going to be a weekend to remember

We have a large tree in the center of our courtyard garden.
Those who have stayed here will know exactly what I am talking about.
This tree shades our friendship table and provides berries for the birds.
It's a tree that needs regular maintenance to keep looking shapely.
There was a large branch to one side that we were dithering over, should we shouldn't we.
Anyway Mother Nature made the final decision for us on Sunday night during extremely high winds and we woke up on Monday to find the branch in the garden.
Thankfully no damage to any structures.
We spent the best part of Monday cutting it up and loading onto the trailer for disposal at our local tip.

Best Scalloped Potatoes 😍😍 In my humble opinion, they are simply the best

Ingredients :
• 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes
• 3 tablespoons butter
• 3 tablespoons flour
• 1 1⁄2cups milk
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1 dash cayenne pepper
• 1 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
• 1⁄2 cup grated cheese, to sprinkle on top
• 1/2 cup sliced green onion

Autumn has arrived at McGregor Backpacker's.
It's that time of the year when the mornings and evenings contain a chill, hinting at the cold to come.
Personally, it's my favorite time of the year after the heat of summer.
I am amazed at how beautiful our gardens suddenly are.
Instead of going into sleep mode, coulor and fragrance abound.

We are sure many tired bodies are looking forward to some down time.

When you arrive you can feel that blanket of calmness, quiet and spirituality gently wrap itself around you.

McGregor is a quirky town. Interesting people, conversations never boring.
One of the oddities is the symbiotic relationship between our wonderful Jimmy's pub and a food truck called Monster Munch that comes to the village every Tuesday.
Monster Munch offer delicious burgers, vegetarians are catered for as well.
You order your burger, walk across to Jimmy's, order your beverage of choice and just chill and chat.
When your order is ready, it's delivered to your table.
What a fabulous set up, win win all round

It's 8pm on Wednesday 19th January.
A 1/2 an hour ago when I watered the garden, these beautiful blooms were still closed.
This is a piece that broke off from the mother plant and we just plonked it in this space.
Nature is wonderful

Here at the backpackers we strive to make each and every guest feel at home.
That goes for those European visitors as well.
In 2020 a pair of European barn swallows came to scout out our place with a view to setting up their home.
Now, our gardens are beautiful so we could not blame them.
Anyway, after much flitting around, they chose their spot. We knew their attempts were not going to be successful as mud does not adhere to wooden planking.
Anyway, after 3 tries with the nest falling down each time, they left.
We were so sad.
This year they came back and proceeded to build in the same spot once again.
We now realised some intervention was needed.
Once they had finished building, we took strips of hessian, cradled the nest and glued the hessian to the poles and boards.
We waited with bated breath to see if they would accept our little renovation. They did.
They are ensconced and happy and we hope to hear little chirps before long. Their perseverance was rewarded

17.50 on a beautiful Sunday at the backpackers. It's still 30 degrees though.
We have watered the courtyard garden which has dropped the temperature a little.
