Summer at the Bunya Mountains – just perfect

A summer break at the Bunya Mountains offers the perfect way to escape from the heat and humidity of summer into cooler temperatures and crisp mountain air. Summer days at the Bunya Mountains are pleasantly warm and comfortable, rather than sticky, hot and humid, and the nights cool down beautifully. Here you have the chance to experience icy cold mountain streams and waterfalls fed by the spring rain, as well as the coolness of the rainforest and the pristinely beautiful scenery. Get up early to watch the stunning summer sunrise, and stay out late enjoying the beautiful sunset. It’s the perfect way to shift into a lower gear this summer. There are plenty of reasons why summer is the season of choice for so many Bunya Mountains visitors – discover them for yourself by booking your Bunya Mountains summer escape here: https://bunyamountains.com.au/accommodation-search/

Don’t forget:
• Hat and sunscreen (even though it’s cooler, you can still get burnt)
• Warmer layers for night-time activities

Its just one week until our Bunya Rainforest event in Allan Stirling Memorial Park, Bunya Mountains.

We are looking forward to a very interesting day, greeting visitors to the Bunyas and catching up with locals.

If you are intending to join us for the day, it is important to remember that we will be "playing" in the bush amongst local plants, animals, insects and birds, so play it safe and use insect repellent, wear closed in shoes, and suitable clothing. Bring drinking water and your lunch.
A reminder also that all children must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult. Come join the fun!!!

Drumroll please … we are delighted to announce the winner of last month’s fungi photography competition! We received some stunning entries (making it very difficult for us to choose just one!), however we have finally reached a decision. Congratulations to Anna Gibbs for your striking fungi photo! This magnificent photo captures the detail and beauty to be found in fungi and we’re impressed with the subject matter, clarity and composition. Great capture, Anna! Please get in contact with us via direct message, so we can provide you with your prize.

Commendable mentions also go to Legsa Leven, Kyle Johnston and Hayley Smith who came very close to winning with the photos shown in the comments below. Nice work capturing a subject that can be tricky to photograph – we look forward to seeing more from you!

Thank you to all who entered our second ever photography competition – we were delighted to receive so many entries (and keep an eye out for some of your photos which we may use in future posts, with appropriate accreditation of course). And also keep an eye out for more upcoming competitions. In case you’d like to do some planning and preparation, the next few topics for our photography competitions will be:

• Astrophotography
• Sunrise/sunset
• Animals (not birds)
• Spectacular views
• Family activities
• Trees in spring
• National Park walks
• People at the Bunya Mountains

Thanks again for your entries – keep them coming! We have some great prizes on offer too, so we look forward to seeing more of your creative works in the next few months.

History written in the Bunya Trees …

Everywhere you look around the Bunya Mountains you can see living history – written in the bunya pines. The notches in the bark you’ll see snaking up the trunks of the trees were made by the local Indigenous people, who ventured up to the mountain daily to gather bunya nuts from the forest. They also used cut vines made into a hoop to help with the climb, and the nuts were poked down using broken-off branches. Soft, juicy, immature nuts were eaten raw while the mature nuts were roasted. Alternatively, kernels were pounded into meal and roasted into a kind of cake that could be stored for several weeks. Unshelled nuts were often buried in netted bags in the beds of creeks for later consumption.

Imagine climbing so high to get the bunya nuts! It must have taken plenty of determination and fearlessness. These ancient trees show an amazing piece of Bunya Mountains history, so keep an eye out for these signs of living history as you walk around the mountain.

(Thanks to Carmen Busby for the striking photo.)

Calling budding photographers – launching our astrophotography competition.

It’s competition time! If you enjoy spending time at the Bunya Mountains and photographing the amazing scenery all around, then we want your best photos! We’re looking for the best astro photograph taken at the Bunya Mountains – and the winning photographer will receive a $300 accommodation voucher to be used at a Bunya Mountains Accommodation Centre property plus a $50 voucher for Poppies on the Hill Café.

A few rules:
• This competition is seeking the best astro photograph taken at the Bunya Mountains. Astrophotography entails photographing astronomical objects, celestial events, star trails and areas of the night sky. However, we want your photo to recognisably show aspects of the Bunya Mountains as well – so it can be considered astro-landscape photography (like the image below).
• There is no cost to enter, but participants by entering agree to allow the Bunya Mountains Accommodation Centre the right to use images for marketing purposes (with appropriate acknowledgement).
• All photographs must be suitable for displaying in a public environment.
• Entries are to be submitted in the comments section of this post.
• Entries close Sunday 19th September, and the winner will be notified by Thursday 30th September.
• The competition is open to professional photographers, amateurs and enthusiasts. There is no age limit.
• Images must be submitted as a high-quality jpeg.
• Participants may enter as many times as they like.
• Each entry must be the original work of the person submitting the entry.

We look forward to seeing your creative and scenic photos of our wonderful Bunya Mountains night sky. Have fun!
