Grey Street in the nineteenth century. The street was renowned for its wide streets at a time of narrow streets. It has been described by Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone as the finest street in England and Radio 4 listeners voted it their favourite street.

Come and visit Hexham Old Gaol, England’s oldest gaol and discover important moments from our region's turbulent past.

Built in 1333, did you know the imposing building in Hexham Town Centre is made of stone from the Corbridge Roman site just a few miles away?

You can discover more about the history of the Gaol, its gruesome stories and some of the colourful characters on a short, family friendly tour at 11am and 2pm.

We are open 10am - 4pm Wednesday to Sunday, and will be open every day of the Northumberland school holidays (20th July - 1st September).

Admission is £7 adults, £6 concessions and under 18s visit for FREE.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

A great day on the Vindolanda excavations, we’ve had lots of visitors coming to see the archaeological activity and it stayed dry!

A highlight was the discovery of this beautifully crafted copper alloy belt buckle, a Celtic type design with traces of the enamel still remaining.

A wonderful description of the return of the curlews, lapwings and oystercatchers to Allendale and the North Pennines National Landscape

Allendale, Northumberland: The valley is suddenly active – it’s reassuring to find oystercatchers, curlews, golden plovers and peewits where they should be

Hexham has once again been voted as one of the happiest places to live in Great Britain 🥳 We're proud to represent Northumberland and the north-east of England in the top ten.

The Right Move 'Happy At Home' survey asks residents how they feel about their area based on 13 happiness factors such as being proud of where you live; people being friendly and polite; cultural activities; and the quality of shops and restaurants.

It's interesting to see that rural residents are generally happier than city residents, especially those living near a national park or Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (recently renamed National Landscapes). We're exceptionally lucky in Hexham to sit between Northumberland National Park and the North Pennines National Landscape. The Northumbrian coast, the Lakes and the Scottish Borders make lovely day trips 🌿https://www.rightmove.co.uk/news/articles/property-news/happy-at-home-survey-2023/

The Vindolanda Trust is thrilled to have been awarded the VisitEngland accolade for Best Told Story 2022-23 at Roman Vindolanda. The history of our remarkable site and the stories that it holds are ever evolving as our excavations and research continue. Sharing those stories and taking people on a journey with us is very important. To receive national recognition for how we do that is absolutely wonderful.

Thank you to all our amazing staff and volunteers, this award is a testament to that team.

Today is 'International Left Handers Day'!

It is therefore once again the perfect day to share this image of the Octavius letter, as Octavius appears to be left handed. He starts his letter on page 2 (top right), followed by pages 1,4 and 3. This is one of the most extensive and complicated letters found at Vindolanda which covers business transactions between Vindolanda and Catterick and includes the phrase 'the roads are awful'. This early account from c. AD 104-120 of the roads in Britain is an opinion that many still share today! This tablet is now on display at the British Museum.
You can read the full translation of this letter on the Roman Inscriptions of Britain website (a fabulous resource for anyone interest in the Vindolanda Writing Tablets) via the link below.

We wish all our left handed followers a very happy day indeed.
