Coming to the museum later this week, an exhibition celebrating the life and work of Harry Berry, the artist responsible for paintings of island life including powerful depictions of the TGB at sea, recalling the disaster of 1969 when the Longhope Lifeboat was lost with all hands.

Harry’s pictures are a greatly cherished part of our collection and his maritime works successfully capture the sea in all its moods and complex motions.

We have 14 of Harry’s paintings and sketches at the Lifeboat Museum, as well as other items he produced along with artefacts and memorabilia from his life and time lived in Hoy & Walls.

Harry’s story is fascinating and his stories and contributions to the community here are the stuff of local legend. We would love you to visit us and learn more about the man, his work and his connection with the Longhope Lifeboat.

Curator, Mike Webster, is collecting together the many items connected with Harry that have been donated and loaned to us and displaying them together for the first time from Wednesday 7 September. This exhibition will remain in place until we close the doors for our winter break in October.

At approximately 17:30 on Monday 27th June, the Maritime Rescue Co-Ordination Centre in Shetland was alerted to reports of a person fallen off a cliff at the Gloup, Orkney.

Kirkwall, Stromness and St Margaret's Hope Coastguard Rescue teams, Coastguard Rescue 900 - Sumburgh and RNLI Kirkwall Lifeboat were all tasked by MRCC Shetland.

Once on scene the officer in charge was made aware of a second person at the bottom of the cliff. The winchman paramedic from Coastguard Rescue 900 and the rope rescue technician from the Coastguard team worked together to transfer one casualty to the aircraft and onwards to the Scottish Ambulance Service. A second casualty was recovered to the top of the cliff by the Coastguard teams and taken to the Balfour Hospital.

Whilst enjoying the coastline in Orkney, Shetland and the rest of the UK:
- always stay away from the cliff edges and NEVER risk your safety for a photo.
- Always keep your dogs on a lead.
- Stick to signposted coastal paths and take note of local warning signs.

Emergency at the coast? See someone in need of help? Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Exciting!

Linking the Orkney mainland to Lamb Holm, Glimps Holm, Burray and South Ronaldsay, the Churchill barriers not only have wrecks of blockships - they also provide a fab place to spot wildlife, sealife and enjoy some sandy beaches. You might even be lucky enough to spot a Groatie Buckie but we won't give away any secrets here 😉
