The glorious red Dining Room laid for a dinner last week. Presided over by a bewigged ancestor of Madame Olda FitzGerald, mother of present owner Catherine FitzGerald, this atmospheric room rejoices in a triptych of long curved windows that look onto the waters beyond the castle. As the sun grew pink with sunset and flooded the room with a glow the candles were lit and guests dined from seasonal Irish produce much of it from the walled gardens. Spend Christmas and New Year in this magical yellow mansion on the scenic Waterford coast in Southern Ireland. Ballynatray House has a wonderful character and a charm all of its own. Those who enjoy an active holiday can spend time walking, hiking, cycling and motoring.
The surrounding coastline offers magical marine life spotting from playful Dolphins, to the seasonal giants of the Minkie, Fin and Humpbacked Whale and massive Basking Sharks. Heading out early, on a crisp morning or when the sun is setting on a calm sea, there is a good chance that you will see them.

For those of you whose thoughts are turning to New Year’s Eve celebrations this year we are delighted to say that one of our favourite houses in England Ashby Manor House is available for exclusive hire from the 29th December to 5th January. Nestled in a picturesque estate, Ashby Manor in Northamptonshire has both a colourful history, the Gunpowder Plot was formed in its rooms and the great architect Lutyens later designed the interiors for the Guest family, and all the modern comforts needed for a fabulous party to bring in 2023.
Seating up to 20 people in the elegant panelled dining room with its roaring fire and large windows (plus room for an extra 12 in an adjoining room) the Manor House sleeps 18 over 9 luxuriously appointed bedrooms. Today I had one of the best country house visits ever, I have wanted to visit the incredible Knowsley Hall since I can remember and it didn’t disappoint. I can’t thank Curator Dr Stephen Lloyd enough, for taking time out of his day to take me on a comprehensive and all access area tour, of this magnificent house. With the added treat of a cup of Earl Grey, beautiful cakes made for us by the Head Chef and the gift of 4 guide books, from different decades since the house opened to the public, I couldn’t have wished for a more perfect day, as you can imagine I was in my element. Still privately owned by Lord and Lady Derby the house can be booked as a venue or film location, and is open to the public on limited dates, but we literally had the pleasure of this Palace to ourselves today, I felt so privileged. So please join me on my journey around this magnificent house, upstairs, downstairs and literally in her Ladyship’s Chamber.
