We open in March so why not pay us and Caerhays a visit?

Did you know that, thanks to the temperate climate, spring arrives in Cornwall much earlier than the rest of the UK? Spring is officially declared in The Duchy when 50 blooms appear on each of the six champion magnolia trees in the county. Last year, spring was declared to have arrived on Friday 26th February - nearly a month before the astronomical first day of spring on the 20th March, and much earlier than the rest of Britain.

What date do you think spring will officially ‘spring’ this year? Caerhays Gardens will reopen for visits on 14th February 🌸 The Great Gardens of Cornwall

Fun Fact Friday

King Harry Ferry

From Truro, Falmouth and west Cornwall, there is no better way to travel to the Roseland Peninsula than to take a shortcut and enjoy a trip across the River Fal, aboard the King Harry Ferry.
The name itself invokes legends – did King Henry VIII visit these shores to check out the building programme of St Mawes Castle? Or, as it is believed, was it named after a chapel that existed on the eastern shore, dedicated at one time to Our Lady and King Henry?
An uncommon name for an unusual form of transport such as the King Harry Ferry is one of only five chain ferries operating in England. Its two 270m long chains not only guide the ferry from side to side but also allow passage of vessels up and down the river enabling the berthing of cruise liners, tankers and bulk carriers as they wait for their next shipping orders. The Fal River is an example of a ria - a drowned valley - and has a narrow meandering central channel with depths up to 25 metres.
It has been a river crossing for centuries. From a simple boat rowed by one or two men, it has changed with the times. A steam ferry began operating in 1889 after the formation of the King Harry Steam Ferry Ltd. The latest ferry was launched in 2006 and it is propelled by hydraulic motors driving the two massive chain wheels, one on each side of the vessel. Windows enable passengers to view the operation of the chains, and transparent panels afford views of the river.
As they say on their website, ‘’let the chains take the strain’’ and take the iconic ferry avoiding an alternative 27-mile route in your car.
