Our guests from the US embarked on an exhilarating birding adventure with Jungle Buddies at Bhigwan. The journey kicked off with a dawn grassland safari on Day 1, the primary objective being a search for wolves. While the elusive wolves remained hidden, the overcast weather didn't deter the group from enjoying spectacular bird sightings. Notable species spotted included Chestnut Bellied Sandgrouse, Rock Bush Quails, Rain Quails, Painted and Grey Francolins, Indian Bush Larks, Rufous Fronted Prinias, and a myriad of other avian delights.
Following a quick breakfast pitstop, the quest continued in pursuit of the Indian Eagle Owl. The group then returned to the homestay, where a delightful lunch awaited. After a brief one-hour rest, the evening grassland safari unfolded, guiding the team to an open rocky habitat. Here, they were treated to close encounters with raptors such as Montagu Harrier, Pallid Harrier, Eurasian Sparrowhawk, Short-Toed Snake Eagle, and the thrilling sight of an Indian Fox. This safari provided ample opportunities for close-quarter photography.
Back at the homestay, a comforting tea preceded a satisfying dinner, wrapping up a day filled with diverse birding experiences.
Next morning, we began with a short excursion before the anticipated boat safari. The team spotted Painted Sandgrouse, Yellow Wattled Lapwings, Brown Crake, and Indian Thicknee in this prelude to the boat safari. Boarding the boat on the backwaters of the Ujjani dam, the guests found themselves surrounded by thousands of migratory ducks and shorebirds. Highlights included Northern Shovelers, Common Pochard, Eurasian Coots, Garganeys, Eurasian Spoonbills, and the majestic Greater Flamingos.

*Saswad: A Grassland Birding Expedition with Jungle Buddies*
Trip Report
Jungle Buddies organized a special grassland birding tour to Saswad on September 2-3, 2023. Our group of ten intrepid bird enthusiasts set out from Mumbai, unknowingly stepping into a world of surprises.
The journey itself was an unexpected adventure. After weeks of rainless skies, the day of our departure was greeted by thunderstorms, a dramatic shift in weather that hinted at exciting discoveries to come. Saswad, nestled in a rain shadow region, typically sees minimal rainfall. Yet, to our amazement, the day unveiled itself with cloud-covered skies and sporadic bursts of sunlight.
As we approached our destination, the harmonious calls of Rain Quails welcomed us, an auspicious start to our birding escapade. These elusive birds showcased their affectionate courtship rituals, a heartwarming sight to behold. The sounds of Painted Francolins echoed through the landscape, accompanied by the vibrant appearance of a male Crested Bunting.
Our first official birding stop was the renowned Waghapur shrublands, an area famed for its wolf, hyena, and fox populations. It's also a hotspot for avian enthusiasts eager to spot Rain Quails, various larks, White-bellied Minivets, and more. Our keen eyes and patient observation paid off as we checked off all four famous larks: Saswad, Rufous-tailed, Ashy-crowned, and Tawny, along with an exciting sighting of a Yellow-crowned Woodpecker. Rain Quails serenaded us with their calls throughout our visit.
The adventure continued as we explored the sacred Tukaai temple and the mighty Dhawalgad fort, offering opportunities to observe raptors and the elusive Striolated Bunting, a rarity in the Indian Subcontinent. Our perseverance was rewarded with glimpses of two Striolated Buntings and an Indian Fox.
On the second day, we ventured into the shrublands near Jejuri, where our cameras captured striking images of Indian Coursers, Greater Grey Shrikes, Rock Bush Quails,
Just like last year, this year as well we are proud to announce Exploring Saswad Grasslands with Jungle Buddies Tours.

Onomatopoeic naming of Birds
How do birds get their names? Many of them are named based on the color of their body feathers, shape and size of their body parts and food habits (eg. Black-winged stilt, Small green bee-eater). Interestingly, some of them get their names from the way they call or sing.
Such names are often called onomatopoeic because they imitate, if only vaguely, the sound that the bird makes.
An example being the name 'Cuckoo' which was derived from the call of Eurasian Cuckoo that literally sounds like 'cuk-koo'.
In Hindi, crows are called Kauwa, resembling their call Kaww…kaww…kaww and Grey Francolin is Teetar since they give out a loud and repetitive call Ka-tee-tar….tee-tar…
In this video Wildlife expert and Mentor Adesh Shivkar explains why the Common Hawk Cuckoo a common resident bird in India found around farmlands and woodlands was often referred to as the Brain Fever Bird by Britishers. The call of this bird has been popularly transcribed as brain-fever in English. The local name also seemed to have been derived in a similar manner, for example Pavshya in Marathi.

Monsoon Transformation trail @ Tungareshwar Forest, Vasai
19 June 2022
With the pre-monsoon showers, myriad changes occur in a forest. To appreciate this transformation that a forest undergoes, Birds Of Thane & Raigad District and Jungle Buddies hosted a monsoon magic transformation trail at Tungareshwar wildlife sanctuary.
This trail was led by our mentor and wildlife expert Adesh Shivkar sir. The trail began with sighting Vigors sunbird, next up were a few plants like Spiral Ginger, and Black and White Musli. The flowering, fruiting and uses of these plants were elaborately explained by Adesh sir. The sun was shining bright and the bird activity was at its peak, we came across Black Naped Monarch, Common Ioras, Racket Tailed Drongo, Golden Fronted Leafbirds and also a few Vigors sunbird. We came across a small nullah where while waiting for the ODK, we were able to observe a pair of Puff Throated Babblers and soon an ODK flew over our heads.
Next on the list were a female Land crab carrying her babies in the pouch, Spot Swordtail and common emigrant butterflies and another Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher flies past us.
Different varieties of trees and their uses especially in medicine and food were also discussed by Adesh sir. A lot of plants that flower only during the first few showers, pollinate and wither away were given special attention by our leader.
The trail concluded with a small discussion about things that were observed during the trail.
We want to this opportunity to thank Adesh Shivkar sir for his guidance and knowledge sharing on trail and thanks to our #junglebuddies participants for making the trail a memorable one.
