This we’re delighted to announce our partnership with Ocean Bottle - a social impact and reusable water bottle brand turning the tide on ocean-bound plastic!

Every guest embarking on an HX journey will receive a complimentary reusable Ocean Bottle, which funds the collection of 1,000 plastic bottles in weight. Including on our very own MS Fridtjof Nansen (which you might be able to spot in the background 😜)

The initiative is another step in our ongoing commitment to being the most sustainable expedition company in the world, building on our landmark decision to become the first cruise line to ban single-use plastics back in 2018.

Our trip is ending, and tomorrow morning, our guests will disembark in Hamburg. We have sailed from Spain to Holland, making stops in France along the way. Our first stop was Bordeaux, where we explored the city despite the rainy weather. Then, we sailed further north to two stunning islands: Ile d'Yeu and Belle Ile, known for their breathtaking scenery and architecture. Our final French stops were Douarnenez and Saint Malo, both brimming with history. We wrapped up our journey in beautiful Harlingen, cruising along the canals in our small boats.

Our first stop in Spain was Ferrol, a port city in the northwestern Galicia region. The city has a rich maritime history and is well known for its fresh seafood and delicious Galician cuisine.

The second stop in Spain was Gijón, a coastal town in northern Spain's Asturias region. One of the highlights of the guided city tour was the Laboral City of Culture building, a cultural complex housed in a former university building.

San Sebastian, our last stop in Spain, is known for its stunning beaches, world-class cuisine, and elegant architecture. The panoramic view of the city and the bay from Mount Urgull is impressive.

Our new guests embarked on MS Fridtjof Nansen in Lisbon, and we've already visited our first two destinations on our voyage to Hamburg. Porto, our first stop after Lisbon, is a fascinating city with a rich history and culture. It's the home of Port wine. Many guests enjoyed our guided city walk under beautiful blue skies. The Ribeira district, with its narrow cobbled streets and colorful houses lining the waterfront, is a particularly charming area.

MS Fridtjof Nansen concluded its Antarctic season in Buenos Aires with happy guests who experienced everything you can expect in Antarctica.

We saw thousands of penguins, albatross chicks almost ready to leave their nests, and had several close encounters with whales.

The weather was mostly favorable during our trip. As typical for the southern oceans, we encountered some wind and occasional snow showers, but we also enjoyed many sunny days.

Have you been to the Antarctic continent yet?

"Despite the challenging weather with wind and snow, today's journey provided us with an authentic Antarctic experience. Our visit to Whalers Bay on Deception Island was truly extraordinary. Nestled within an active volcano's caldera, the site offers a glimpse into history with remnants from the whaling era and old scientific bases. It's a surreal landscape that feels like stepping onto another planet. 🏔❄

🌟 What an incredible first day on our Antarctic Highlights expedition! 🌊 Today, we embarked on a thrilling journey to Yalour Islands, where we were greeted by the charming Adelie penguins and curious Leopard seals. Witnessing these majestic creatures in their natural habitat was truly a breathtaking experience!

In the afternoon, our adventure continued as we landed on Pleaneau Island. Here, we were greeted by a bustling community of Gentoo penguins and were mesmerized by the rich bird wildlife surrounding us. From giant petrels to terns and storm petrels, the island was teeming with life at every turn!

But perhaps the most unforgettable part of our day was cruising through the iceberg garden. The sight of the incredible, uniquely shaped bergs with their stunning tones of blue left us in absolute awe. It’s moments like these that remind us of the sheer beauty and wonder of our planet.

Here’s to more unforgettable experiences and cherished memories as our Antarctic expedition continues! 🐧❄

3rd picture: Penguin after crossing the Drake passage :)
Did you know … ? The passage is incredibly deep.
This waterway connecting the Pacific Ocean to Atlantic Ocean is impressively 1000 km (620 miles) wide, about the distance from London to Berlin. Its average depth is 3 400 meters (11,150 feet), although the ocean floor is thought to reach depths of up to 4 800 meters (15,700 feet) near the passage’s southern and northern boundaries.

From our Antarctic Circle Expedition.
We landed Bongrain Point in the morning and enjoyed the vibrant Adelie Penguin colony there. Amazing to see the Penguin Chicks and their sweet behaviors.
In the afternoon we did a small boat cruising at Jenny Island, where we Southern elephant Seals and Antarctic Fur Seals were hauled out along the shore. On the ice off the shore we spotted many Crabeater Seals and a few Leopard Seals.
After a day with such an abundance of Wildlife, the perfect ending was the spectacular sunset over Marguerite Bay.
Did you know the Southern Elephant Seal can dive up to 2000 meters?

From our Antarctic Circle Expedition.
We visited Stonington Island, where we visited the old British and American bases. Both bases operated on the same tiny Island in Marguerite Bay. The impressive glacier behind has retreated significantly since the bases were operational. It used to strech all the way to the island, giving the base a natural ice-ramp to the mainland. They used this to explore the area with their sled dogs.
Later the same afternoon we visited Red Rock Ridge and the Adelie penguin colony. Many Crabeater Seals was relaxing on the ice close to the landing site.
These sites are only accessible a short period every year. Make sure you are free to join next time :)

A few days ago we felt like looking in a mirror! We met our sister ship MS Roald Amundsen in Orne Harbour while we had our landing operation. A great chance to exchange quick hugs & stories and seeing our sister again after meetin in the Northwest Passage in late August. Great was also the weather in Orne. After a beautiful hike up we were able to enjoy the Chinstrap Penguin colony and the view of the bay in sunshine! Would you have wanted to share this day with us?

Did you ever want to go camping surrounded by glaciers and falling asleep to the sound of Antarctic Terns and distant penguins? We’ve got some reasons for you to try! It is incredibly beautiful and you will feel like one of the explorers while setting up your tent and roaming around the campsite. The ship leaves us for the night and we can enjoy the Antarctic Silence. It is a great experience and don’t worry, you won’t be too cold! Would you want to go camping with us?

On this trip we visited Whalers Bay again! Sunshine and barely any wind gave us good conditions so we were not only able to walk up to Neptune’s Window but also able to offer a guided hike up Ronald Hill. This gave us a great view of Whalers Bay from the top. The weather also allowed us to go kayaking and our guests were brave enough to jump into the water for a Polar Plunge! Would you go swimming in Whalers Bay?

Would you want to walk about 50 meters up and down every time to get food and get back home again? Not really? The chinstrap penguins at Orne Harbor do that every day and what an impressive sight that is! We have visited Orne yesterday, one of the most challenging but also most rewarding landing sites. After you have walked up the hill you will find a Chinstrap Colony and be rewarded with beautiful views on glaciers and the bay (once the fog has lifted, of course)! Will you walk up Orne Harbor when you come here?

Happy Antarctica Day, fellow explorers! 🇦🇶
Today we celebrate the signing of the Antarctic Treaty. This international agreement was put into place in 1959 to regulate the activities on the White Continent and to make sure the freedom for scientific research is respected and any military use is banned. We are so happy this treaty exists because it helps to protect this pristine and beautiful environment that we love to explore! So today we will think of all the beautiful memories we made way down South, all the expeditions we went on and all the people we have met along the way that share our passion.
What does Antarctica Day mean to you?

Port Lockroy
We have visited our favorite post office again: Port Lockroy on Goudier Island! We picked up the Port Lockroy Team, who did a presentation onboard and shop for our guests. Our guests went cruising around and in-between the islands with our zodiacs and got good views of the Gentoo and Blue- eyed s**g colonies. During our cruise we also spotted some Weddell seals hauling out on the fast ice, enjoying some rays of sunshine. Another thing to look out for on this day are the flags of Port Lockroy: In celebration of Polar Pride, the staff is flying the Pride Flag next to their base! We are so happy about this inclusivity at the end of the world! 🏳‍🌈

Petermann Island – 17. Nov 2023
Weather and ice conditions made us change our plans for the day but it showed once again that on an expedition Plan B (or C or M or Å) can be just as good as Plan A! We landed on Petermann Island and there the weather was much kinder to us! We were able to see Gentoo Penguins and even some Adélies showed themselves. Petermann Island provides us with great views on the penguin colonies, icebergs and the Lemaire Channel just a stone’s throw away from our landing site. Would Petermann Island be on your bucket list after seeing these pictures?

We have landed at Estación Científica Almirante Brown, also known as Brown Station, in Paradise Bay on a beautiful sunny day again! The Argentinian station is a great place to visit early in the season while it is not manned with researchers yet, especially since it is very sheltered by the nearby mountains. We were also able to cruise at close by Skontorp Cove in the morning before our landing in great conditions! Could you imagine being a researcher stationed in a place with a view this beautiful?

Did you know that the southernmost post office is in Antarctica? The British Base on Port Lockroy serves as a museum, souvenir shop & post office and we were able to cruise in our small boats around the island. That gave us beautiful views of the buildings and the Gentoo penguin colony living there. In the bay behind Port Lockroy, we saw 10 Weddell Seals relaxing on the ice. At the same time, the staff members of Port Lockroy were on board MS Fridtjof Nansen to speak about their work. In the afternoon, we moved to Damoy Point, a beautiful landing site that provides a lot of British Antarctic History as well. There we got to get a closer view on the iconic orange Damoy Hut and the Argentinian Hut. We were also able to do our snowshoe hike! Would you like to learn more about the history of Antarctica and its different bases?

What a beautiful day in Paradise Harbour and it really lives up to its name! We were able to land at Almirante Brown Station - one of 13 Argentinian scientific stations in Antarctica – where we could observe Gentoo penguins and the buildings of the station, which is manned for research in the summer. At the same time, we went out cruising in our small boats in Skontorp Cove right next to Brown Station. That gave us the possibility to observe blue-eyed s**gs, snowy sheatbills, more gentoo penguins and just a great variety of birds in between the ice. Would you agree with us that this is truly paradise?

First Landing - Whalers Bay:
Today we have started our Antarctic season! We visited Whalers Bay on Deception Island which is an important historic and geological landing site. Deception Island is an active volcano system and a natural safe harbour. It was used by Whalers in the beginning of the 19th century as a basis for their operations and it is to this day an important place for scientific research.
During this landing we were able to check some of Antarcticas Must-See's and Must-Do's: Penguins, Historic Sites and Polar Plunges!

We have spent two sunny and windy days in Puerto Natales. The city is popular with travellers that go on to explore Torres del Paine – one of the largest and most visited national parks in Chile – and that is exactly what we did there too! In the park which is one of the 8 Natural Wonders in the world we were hiking and discovering the wildlife. The next day in Puerto Natales there was time to explore the city and the close by Milodón Cave. Have you ever been hiking in Torres del Paine or would you like to go? Tell us about it!

We visited Puerto Edén on our way down the coast of Chile! It is one of the most isolated inhabited place in the country and home to some of the last Kawésqar people. The community does not use roads but instead the houses are connected with wooden boardwalks. The local guides welcomed us warmly and showed us around their home in most wonderful sunshine - which is very unusual for Puerto Edén since it usually rains a lot! Around 170 people live there and you can only reach the village by boat. So we were very happy to have been able to explore this hidden green settlement. Would you like to explore Puerto Edén with us?
