UPCOMING EXHIBITION •
GEORGE BALOGHY
‘Urban Pastoral’
Opening Tuesday 2 May

The Pastoral is a historical genre of landscape painting going back at least four centuries, revelling in the beauty and romance of the rural countryside. The title of this exhibition, ‘Urban Pastoral’, appears contradictory, however when applied to Auckland City, large swathes of the environment do look like the countryside. Auckland’s sprawling parks, volcanic cones and the profusion of trees through suburbia make it look like a giant garden.

In this exhibition Baloghy focuses on the beauty and interplay between the built environment, the natural landscape and the harbour. It is done with the familiar eye of someone who knows the area intimately and whose personal life has evolved to the rhythm and pulse of the city. Baloghy has painted Auckland over many decades, recording its changes over time. New apartments and towers pop up and one could regard these paintings as a record of the evolution of Auckland.

They are actually more than that – they are the story of an artist’s lifelong romance with his city.

The exhibition can now be previewed on our website by clicking on the link in our bio.

Ken Kendall was born and raised in New Zealand. From early childhood he was deeply interested in modelling the human figure. For some years he taught art at intermediate and high schools in his home city of Auckland.

Permanent collections in New Zealand, Australia, America, United Kingdom and Europe display ‘Kendall’ masterworks. In April 1994 Kendall exhibited a group of bronzes in London in association with the Shakespearean Globe Theatre Trust. In 1997 Kendall was commissioned by the Diocesan School in Auckland to sculpt a charming life-size bronze of a young girl for the entrance hall of the Junior School. His lovely Joanna was met with such success that he was also commissioned to sculpt a bronze work of a senior girl. In 1999 he was commissioned by the Masterton City Council to do a life-size bronze of Russian Jack for its city park. His most recent commission was a life-size bronze of the Masterton founder Joseph Masters. This stands in the main street of Masterton in the Wairarapa where Ken lived until he died on 27th February 2012.

Steven Dews is one of Britain's most celebrated marine artists. Born in Yorkshire in 1949, Dews divides his time between his homes in Australia and on England's southern coast.

Dews is a highly experienced yachtsman having owned cruising and race yachts. He has sailed on Lulworth and Velsheda, and his passion for ships and the sea is clearly evident in the composition and detail of his paintings. Dews states:

"I sail so that I can paint and I paint so that I can sail, they feed each other both literally and emotionally.”

Dews’ paintings are prized amongst collectors and have seen him attract major patrons including the Royal Yacht Squadron, the Marine Board of New South Wales and the New York Yacht Club. He has also undertaken private commissions for marine collectors and America’s Cup syndicate owners around the world.

Steven Dews’s work is avidly collected around the world. Above all, he lives and loves the subjects he paints, and spends any of his spare time, sailing.
