Ambassador Trevor chatting with Tánaiste Micheál Martin, Minister for Foreign Affairs, in Cork yesterday at the Naval Commissioning Ceremony.
Ambassador Trevor is wearing a traditional Māori cloak called a kākahu huruhuru, or sometimes a korowai.
Māori weaving is a highly specialized practice involving tikanga (protocols) rituals, knowledge, and skills that have been passed down through generations of women. The incorporation of feathers has gained popularity from the latter half of the 19th century, because of their skillful construction, and also because birds were traditionally seen as messengers from the spiritual realm.
Our kākahu huruhuru was a gift from Te Hurumanu ki Tauranga Moana in Aotearoa New Zealand, and will remain here in Dublin, to be worn at official ceremonies and gatherings - so now you know!
