Clearwater Marine Aquarium recently opened their newest habitat designed to help take care of rescued manatees. Rescued manatees that arrive at CMA have been rehabilitating at other facilities through the Manatee Rescue & Rehabilitation Partnership (MRP). After arrival, manatees will undergo an acclimation period where their behavior will be closely monitored to ensure their transition to the CMA facility is an easy one.

It’s a fact!
The manatee’s closest living land relatives are the elephant and the hyrax (a small, gopher-sized mammal.) While the similarities between manatees and elephants may be more apparent, all three animals descended from a common ancestor. Fusiform.

Not only is it a fun word to say 🤪 but it is the chosen scientific word to describe the shape of manatees (and many other aquatic animals!).

Fusiform is another word for a streamlined or spindle-shaped body. Manatees are built like large torpedoes with paddle-shaped tails. Their shape helps them maneuver underwater while their tail propels them forward.
