Happy feels like summer but it’s still technically spring to you!

It’s been a while since I’ve introduced myself so here’s a little snippet: I’m Shannon, owner & operator since 2015 when this whole lifestyle generation station popped off!

I’ve been a hairstylist in Richmond since 2005 when I began my apprenticeship at Austin’s Salon in Carytown. I worked at a few other salons, gathering cutting & coloring education from a wide variety of brands, before opening my own studio 9 years ago.

I love working behind the chair, creating hair styles that effortlessly enhance your lifestyle. One of my favorite elements of stylist life is the diversity of my clientele, I learn so much every day from you guys. Gratitude shout out to those of you have been with me my entire career!

I love meeting new people and figuring out if we are the correct fit for each other. If we dig one another then: happy dance, high fives & a great big yay!!!

In case you were thinking of curling your hair on a certain love holiday coming up this week I’m gonna break down some of the pros and cons of each of the hot tools available to give you those sought after waves that stay:

Curling Iron

Pros: You have more control over the size and shape of your curls and are able to achieve more uniform curls. Curling irons easily provide smooth curls/waves with minimal flyaways and frizz. Curling Iron curls tend to last a long time, especially when finished with hairspray.

Cons: Because the barrel is a set size, you are limited and would need multiple tools to achieve different looks. Usually a curling iron on long or short hair takes practice and patience to master.

Curling Wand

Pros: Curling wands are great for quick/messy curls and touch ups and can sometimes have interchangeable barrels for more sizing options

Cons: You have a great chance of burning yourself and can be hard to master

Flat Iron

Pros: You’re able to achieve different types of curls with one single tool. Also, flat irons provide a more even distribution of heat over the hair allowing the curls to last much longer. Because you can curl and straighten with a flat iron, it's a great investment tool.

Cons: Learning to curl with a flat iron can be a bit of a learning curve and not every flat iron is ideal for curling.

I love sharing things that I love!

Whether it’s my current favorite hair product or travel spot - I love sharing things I know you’re gonna enjoy!

But today, I’m going to un-influence you.

Instead of sharing my current obsessions and why you should buy them... I’m going to share what hair products you need to TOSS!

I know it’s easy to find yourself scrolling through social media and before you know it you’re hitting the “Buy Now” button. So I thought it would be fun to challenge each other to also take the time to declutter what no longer is working for us.

#1 Expired Products
Most non-aerosol products like shampoo and conditioner usually have a shelf life of about a year after opening. Aerosol products like hairspray and dry shampoo, tend to be good for a little longer because of their limited air exposure but typically are good 18 months after opening. Most unopened products have a shelf life of 2-3 years.

#2 Products You Don’t Really Love
If you’re hanging on to products “just in case”. Maybe it’s not your favorite product but you’re hanging on to it “just in case” you run out of your favorite product and can’t replace it right away. Maybe you’re hanging on to it because it once worked for your hair but it doesn’t work for your current cut, color or style. Either way, if you don’t see yourself using it in the next month - pitch or donate it!

#3 Samples and Travel Sizes
I love to keep some samples and travel sizes for traveling but it’s easy to end up with more than we will use before they expire. When going through these products, ask yourself how many trips you have planned in the upcoming year and keep enough, plus a few (keyword: few) extras and donate the rest.

Peppermint oil has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that help prevent and relieve dandruff, dermatitis, and burning or itching.

It also improves blood flow to the scalp to speed antioxidants and nutrients to the hair roots.

Peppermint oil may even help with hair growth more effectively than Minoxidil.
