Sundarban, the world biggest mangrove forest situated in the south-west corner of Bangladesh, is a home to many different species of plants, birds, mammals, insects, reptiles and fishes. The total area of Sundarban is 10,000 sq. kilometer including Indian portion and out of 10,000 sq. km, 6,000 sq. km belongs to Bangladesh. The forest abounds with 330 plant species, 35 species of reptiles, 400 types of fishes, 270 species of birds and 42 species of mammals. The main tourist spots in Sunderland are Karamjol, Katka, Kochikhali, Hiron point and Mandarbaria. Hiron Point (Nilkamal) for tiger, deer, monkey, crocodiles, birds and natural beauty. Katka for deer, tiger, crocodiles, varieties of birds and monkey, morning and evening symphony of wild fowls. Vast expanse of grassy meadows running from Katka to Kachikhali (Tiger Point) provides opportunities for wild tracking. Tin Kona Island for tiger and deer. The distance of Bandarban from Chittagong is 92 Km.by road. The area of Bandarban is 4479.04 Sqr km. and the total population is 3, 00,740. This district has a history and a long nourished heritage. During the British period in 1860, hilly region was taken away from the chitttagong district forming a new chittagong hill district. In 1891 according to the local custom it was divided into three circles. The present Bandarbn district was included in the Bomang circle. The head of the circle is called Circle Chief. There are 11 ethnic diversities herein Bandarban creating a versatile color of life. Shangu and Matamuhuri, these two rivers with their violent current are flowing through Bandarban in a serpentine course. Nature has adorned this region with its magnificent and splendid green ornaments.
